Animal Care Officer

Overview

The Animal Care Officer is responsible for enforcing the Chapter 6 Ordinance in the City of Corpus Christi. They accomplish this through education, enforcement, and prosecution. Officers respond to various calls for service, including those regarding stray animals, aggressive animals, injured or sick animals, bite investigations, and cases of neglect or cruelty. They also handle other inquiries related to animal welfare.

Responsibilities

• Responds to calls for service regarding domestic and wildlife animals

• Patrol the city, enforcing its ordinances, issuing warnings and/or citations

• Safely and humanely capture and transport animals, including those that are sick, injured, or potentially dangerous

• Write a detailed report of actions taken on each call worked and input information into Chameleon

• Responsible for holding and maintaining the given live release percentage for CCACS

• Transport animals to rescue partners and relocate wildlife

• Demonstrate a high level of customer service with citizens both in the field and at the CCACS campus

• Maintain professionalism while dealing with citizens and strive to provide education concerning the city’s ordinances

• Knowledgeable about the services the Animal Care Services department can provide, and the Chapter 6 ordinances

• Assist citizens with finding resolutions to problems

• Responds and conducts investigations concerning animal cruelty, neglect of animals, and animal bites

• Conduct an initial investigation to provide information for an ACS Investigator to follow up

• Responsible for contacting all involved persons concerning the report, documenting evidence to include the animals with photographs, impounding animals when appropriate, and clearing them through the ACS Investigator or Supervisor

• Testify to the evidence that is obtained throughout an investigation. Examples of this would include meetings with Court Prosecutors, DA, ADA, Detectives, etc., as well as testifying in Municipal Courts, County Courts, Circuit Courts, etc

• Assist the Shelter Operations with cleaning kennels, feeding animals, general campus upkeep, and transporting animals

• Assist the Clinic with vaccinations, medications, and animal transportation

• Assist in the euthanasia of animals as needed

• May be asked to perform other duties as assigned

Position Type and Typical Hours of Work

· Non-Exempt – Full-Time

• Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays is a schedule requirement

· In the event of an emergency, employees are required to work to provide for the safety and well-being of the public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services.

Qualifications

· High School Diploma / GED

· Six (6) months to one (1) year of experience

Licenses and Certifications

Required

· A valid driver's license is required; successful out-of-state candidates must be able to obtain a valid Texas driver's license within 90 days of hire

Required within six (6) months of hire

· Basic Animal Control Officer Certification

· Euthanasia Certification

· Bite Stick/ Chemical Capture

· Complete The Filed Training Program

Required within twelves (12) months of hire

· NACA Animal Control Officer I

Basis of Rating

A recruitment consultant will evaluate all applications against the posted qualifications and may request additional information. The city may also conduct additional skill assessment tests, in addition to the panel interview.
