Position Title: Animal Specimen Courier

Position Summary:
The Animal Specimen Courier is responsible for the secure, timely, and respectful transport of animal specimens between the Nebraska Humane Society (NHS), the University of Nebraska–Lincoln (UNL) laboratory, and designated return locations for Rainbow Bridge services. This role ensures compliance with safety, documentation, and communication standards while maintaining professionalism and respect for sensitive materials.
Essential Job Functions

Safely pick up, transport, and deliver animal specimens to assigned locations in accordance with established procedures. Obtain required signatures or proof of delivery upon completion.

Utilize GPS systems and local area knowledge to determine efficient delivery routes that optimize time, safety, and fuel efficiency.

Properly load, secure, and unload specimens to prevent damage or contamination. This may involve lifting and carrying light to moderately heavy items.

Conduct daily vehicle inspections and perform routine care, including monitoring fuel levels, oil, tire pressure, and overall vehicle condition. Report any mechanical issues promptly.

Maintain clear and timely communication with internal departments, NHS employees, laboratory personnel, and other stakeholders regarding pickup and delivery schedules or delays.

Accurately maintain delivery logs, mileage records, and any required expense or transport documentation in accordance with organizational policies.

Perform all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Valid driver's license with a clean driving record and demonstrated commitment to safe driving practices.

Ability to lift, carry, and transport light to moderately heavy packages safely and consistently.

Familiarity with Omaha – Lincoln area and proficient in using GPS devices and navigation applications.

Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to meet delivery deadlines.

Courteous, respectful, and professional demeanor when interacting with staff, partners, and recipients, particularly in sensitive situations.

Have a personal cellular phone that can be used subject to reimbursement.
Work Conditions

The noise level in the office environment is usually quiet, though barking or whining of animals may be escalated at certain times in certain areas of the building.

Occasional exposure to offensive odors may occur during specimen transport.

Incumbent will operate an NHS vehicle between Omaha, Lincoln, and within the Metro Omaha area.

High exposure to animals whose reactions to the shelter environment cannot be predicted.

Temperatures in the shelter environment are varied, though usually moderate, and dependent on the season.

Potential exposure to zoonotic diseases and hazardous chemicals.

Ability to work around animals without severe allergic reactions.

As work may need to be done outside of the shelter, the employee may encounter environmental issues outside of our control such as fallen tree limbs, rainstorms, or snow/ice. The employee occasionally works in high precarious places; when this occurs, the employee must report this immediately to their direct supervisor who will work to resolution.
