Applications Services Engineer

Job Summary

IPG Photonics is seeking a highly motivated and experienced individual to fill a critical role in the delivery of professional applications services for IPG products and customers. The Applications Services Engineer will work with state of the art laser processing equipment, as well as the latest in robotics and machine tool technology. The ideal applicant is a hands-on person who enjoys working with machinery and electronics. Additionally, good work ethics and strong interpersonal skills are required since the position involves daily contact with IPG customers.

The position will be based out of Novi, MI and remotely supported as needed by Kingston, Ontario and Oxford, MA.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Strong customer service focused skills; communication of technical details to customers to support various application related requests, process troubleshooting to determine support requirements, and coordinating schedules for customer site visits
  • Equipment demonstrations for potential customers.
  • Identify and recommend equipment based on application evaluation feasibility test.
  • Set up & operation of robotic & CNC laser welding / cutting /drilling equipment for customer application testing
  • Perform inspection of samples, including optical microscopy and metallographic cross sectioning, polishing for weld inspection
  • Documentation of test results in electronic reports
  • Support of engineering department testing, design, new design recommendations
  • Support of Sales department at trade shows and customer sales visits/calls
  • Advise management on customer satisfaction, product quality/reliability, and potential product improvement ideas

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Applications Service Engineers are expected to maintain proper personal appearance as a representative of IPG Photonics.
  • Engineers should display good interpersonal skills, excellent customer service, and behave as a team player.
  • Engineers must consider upselling opportunities while onsite and be willing to complete other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

Education:

  • BS Engineering degree
  • 1+ years experience in similar role
  • Background in electronics, machine or manufacturing technology
  • Experience with CAD/CAM, CNC or robotic system programming
  • Ability to quickly learn and assimilate new information across a wide range of topics.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, complete tasks on schedule, and meet deadlines.
  • Previous industrial laser applications experience a plus

Required Abilities:

  • Up to 80% of travel may be needed depending upon customer needs.
  • Valid driver's license required
  • Ability to work and troubleshoot independently
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Reading and interpreting of electrical schematics, pneumatic and mechanical drawings
  • Knowledge and experience with PLCs are a plus
  • General knowledge of fiber optic components and test equipment is a plus
  • Experience with optical and electrical test methods and equipment in support of active fiber devices such as fiber amplifiers and lasers is a plus.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift fifty pounds and travel
