This is apprentice level work involving the maintenance and construction of the wastewater-sanitary collection/storm water collection system and performs related work as required. Operates one or more types of automotive equipment and performs a variety of manual tasks; does related work as required.
Standing, walking, driving, lifting (90 lbs), pushing or pulling, bending, reaching, squatting, reading, writing, hearing, talking, seeing (clear vision near and/or far), and working with others and alone. Work with machinery and a variety of tools; may work in various lighting situations; high and low temperatures; wet and dry conditions; and noise, dust, and odor levels may fluctuate;

Must be capable of entering and functioning in confined spaces safely;

Must be capable of working in open excavations and utilizing trenching and shoring techniques;

Some knowledge of municipality construction and maintenance principles;

Some knowledge of traffic laws and regulations;

Ability to make minor equipment repairs;

Some knowledge of the Public Services Department activities;

Expected to perform the following as it could be a critical part of the position:

Must have good oral and written communication skills;

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public;

Must have the ability and skills necessary to successfully complete the apprenticeship within three years of appointment;

Completion of a high school diploma or GED.

Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license and certified driver's license CDL "B" endorsement with air brakes preferred; or the ability to obtain within the first six (6) months of employment.
A written test will be provided for this position.
