POSITION: Specialist Technician (Aquatic Research Assistant)
START DATE: August 2026 (9 months, full time)
PAY RATE: $22.50 to $25.00 per hour (depending on qualifications)

JOB DESCRIPTION:
This position will support the Stream Habitat Investigations research program within the Aquatic Research Section at Colorado Parks and Wildlife. Current research projects are focused on sediment transport, stream restoration, fish passage, and application of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. Responsibilities of the position include river-related fieldwork, data management, and data analysis, with a specific focus on hydraulic modeling. Fieldwork will include topographic and bathymetric surveys, electrofishing surveys, hydrologic and hydraulic measurements, and operation of RFID systems. Following the field season, the position will support hydraulic modeling to evaluate sediment transport for a tracer-rock study evaluating the effectiveness of a stream restoration project. Data analysis will also include processing and analyzing topo-bathymetric survey data with ArcGIS. Data management requires utilization of Shiny apps developed with RStudio. Additional duties may include the preparation of reports and peer-review publications. The position requires frequent overnight travel throughout Colorado.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Preference will be given to candidates with a college degree or coursework in geomorphology, hydrology, engineering, GIS, and/or ecological restoration. Prior experience with hydraulic modeling (HEC-RAS, SRH-2D) is preferred, while experience with MS Excel, ArcGIS Pro, RStudio, and/or Program MARK is beneficial. The ideal candidate will have experience working in rivers, including wading, rafting, and general river safety. Physical requirements include the ability to lift and carry 50 pounds repeatedly, wade and snorkel in rivers, and walk more than 2 miles over uneven ground. Although previous experience is important, a willingness to learn, positive attitude, and strong work ethic are indispensable.
