Arc Flash Collection Technician

Description:

Position Overview:

SCT Operations, Inc. is seeking a self-driven Arc Flash Collection Technician to join our electrical safety team. This is a hands-on, on-the-road field role supporting the collection of arc flash and infrared thermography data across commercial, industrial, and utility client sites throughout the U.S. The work is broad, you'll handle everything from onsite data collection and equipment inventory to client coordination and field reporting, with real ownership over your projects.

This role is built for a self-manager: someone who thrives working independently, takes pride in the quality of their work, and is comfortable representing SCT as the sole company presence on a client site, whether the project starts from scratch or following up on previous work.

The Ideal Candidate:

You're an experienced electrician, electrical technician, or thermographer, licensed or not, who knows how to read a room, work independently, and catch data issues before they become engineering headaches. You understand how an electrical distribution system is laid out, including conduit runs and circuit tracking, and you're comfortable removing panel covers to access internal components, fully suited up in arc flash PPE. You can hold a professional conversation with a plant manager just as easily as you can troubleshoot a thermal camera in a server room. Travel is part of the job, and that suits you fine.

Location & Travel:

  • Open to candidates located anywhere, with a preference for technicians based along the East Coast and Mid-West
  • Must live near a major airport for ease of travel
  • Typical schedule: fly out Sunday or early Monday, return by Friday — flexible based on client work hours and project needs
  • Assignment lengths vary, typically 1–6 weeks depending on project scope
  • You book your own travel and manage expenses tracking on a weekly basis; all approved costs are fully reimbursed
  • Valid driver's license required; comfortable driving across multiple states
  • Key Responsibilities:
  • Travel to client facilities across the U.S. to collect arc flash study data, equipment inventory, electrical parameters, and site configurations using our iOS field app
  • Understand how an electrical distribution system is configured including conduit routing and circuit tracking to accurately document equipment and connections
  • Safely remove panel and dead-front covers, wearing required arc flash PPE, to access and document internal equipment information
  • Conduct infrared thermography scans of electrical distribution systems and capture high-quality thermal images and supporting data
  • Coordinate directly with client site contacts to schedule and execute fieldwork, serving as the sole representative of SCT on site for all-new projects and follow-up visits alike
  • Run your own QA in the field identify gaps and re-collect data before leaving the site
  • Communicate clearly with our internal engineering team on findings, constraints, and project status
  • Manage your own travel logistics and submit weekly expense reports; all approved costs are fully covered
  • Maintain detailed field notes and project documentation, ensuring accuracy of data entry and metadata
  • Follow all OSHA, NFPA 70E, and facility-specific safety protocols; maintain required safety certifications

Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of hands-on experience in arc flash data collection, electrical fieldwork, or infrared thermography
  • Active Thermography Certification (Level I or higher — ISO 18434-1 or equivalent)
  • Proficiency with thermal imaging cameras, data export, and basic image analysis
  • Working knowledge of electrical distribution systems, including conduit layouts and circuit tracing
  • Comfort working near energized equipment and removing panel covers with appropriate PPE
  • Strong self-management skills — able to handle multi-week travel schedules and a typical ~50-hour work week (including travel time, onsite work, and office time for reporting) without close supervision
  • Promptness and reliability — you show up on time and follow through, every time
  • Strong communication and customer relations skills; comfortable being the face of SCT at every site
  • Proficiency with mobile data collection apps (iOS) and field documentation systems
  • Willingness to comply with background checks and site-specific safety training

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Licensed electrician or electrical technician certification (any state) — not required
  • NFPA 70E awareness, training, or certification
  • Prior experience with arc flash studies or NFPA 70B maintenance programs
  • Prior experience as part of a traveling field technician team
  • Experience managing travel bookings and corporate expense reimbursement

What We Offer

  • Competitive annual salary based on experience and certifications
  • 100% company-paid travel expenses (flights, hotels, ground transportation, meals while on the road)
  • Company-paid health, vision, and dental insurance
  • 401(k) retirement plan
  • Paid time off (PTO)
  • Time at your home base between assignments as workload permits
  • Real ownership: you're the expert on your site, and your judgment matters
  • A supportive engineering team behind you, not micromanaging you

Work Environment & Physical Demands

Work is performed in diverse field environments including office buildings, data centers, manufacturing facilities, utility substations, and industrial plants. This role requires:

  • Ability to climb ladders, work at heights, and navigate tight spaces to access electrical equipment
  • Physical capability to carry thermal imaging camera, laptop, and field equipment (typically 15–25 lbs total)
  • Comfort working near energized electrical equipment in compliance with OSHA and NFPA 70E standards
  • Flexibility to work extended hours on-site depending on facility availability and project needs; overtime and total weekly hours (typically around 50, including travel and reporting) may vary by state

SCT Operations, Inc. is committed to building a diverse and inclusive team.
