Architectural Designer

Charlottesville, United States

About Us

We are an award-winning architecture firm committed to serving our community through innovative design solutions. Founded in 1987 with offices in Charlottesville and Harrisonburg, and expanding into Blacksburg, our practice is built on the foundation of listening to our clients' needs and developing the most efficient, thoughtful solutions to their design challenges. We pride ourselves on our collaborative approach and our ability to work across diverse project types and architectural styles throughout Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina.

Position Overview

We are seeking a community-minded Architectural Designer to join our growing team. Whether you're a recent graduate or bring several years of experience, if you're passionate about design that makes a difference, we'd love to hear from you. This role offers the unique opportunity to contribute to meaningful projects while gaining experience across all phases of design and client relationship building.

As a smaller firm, we offer something many larger practices can't: real responsibility from day one and diverse project exposure. We're proud of our collaborative culture and our track record of promoting from within—many of our senior team members started right where you would.

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you'll contribute to all aspects of our design process, with a focus on healthy, energy-efficient, and durable solutions:

  • Support the development of architectural projects from concept through construction administration
  • Collaborate with project teams and clients to understand project vision, needs, and constraints
  • Prepare construction documents, renderings, and visualizations
  • Participate in client meetings and presentations
  • Conduct job site visits and field verification
  • Coordinate with team members on project deliverables
  • Contribute to design development across all project phases
  • Maintain attention to project schedules and quality standards

Required Qualifications

  • Architectural or Interior Design degree
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, Revit, SketchUp, and Adobe Creative Suite
  • Excellent critical thinking skills with strong attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities
  • Outstanding written, verbal, and visual communication skills
  • Self-motivated, adaptable team player with a collaborative spirit
  • Strong interpersonal skills and enthusiasm for teamwork
  • Authorization to work in the United States
  • Willingness to relocate to Charlottesville

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of construction documents and the design-construction process
  • Understanding of building science and constructability principles
  • Experience with sustainable design practices
  • Active involvement in community organizations or initiatives
  • Familiarity with Virginia building codes and local regulations

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package
  • Professional development opportunities and continuing education support
  • Mentorship and clear pathways for career advancement
  • Collaborative, creative work environment with diverse project portfolio
  • Opportunity to make a meaningful impact in Virginia communities
  • Growth opportunities within our expanding practice

Growth Opportunities

We value professional development and will invest in your growth as a designer. While technical skills matter, we're more interested in finding someone who shares our values and commitment to community-centered design. We believe the right attitude and work ethic are the foundation for long-term success, and we're committed to helping our team members advance their careers with us.
