Archives Specialist / Cataloging Librarian

About the Position

The Marquette Regional History Center is looking to fill our Cataloging Librarian position within the John M. Longyear Research Library. The right candidate will work alongside our research librarian by processing donated archival materials while maintaining our busy non-circulating research library. This position leads our local history book club, works with library patrons, guides volunteers, and works with the curator.

The Cataloging Librarian ensures that the many resources of the John M. Longyear Library are available to patrons by cataloging acquisitions and creating both physical and digital finding aids and inventories. This includes not only books, but also photographs, maps, audio-visual media, and archival collections. The cataloging librarian also provides reference and research services to library patrons and museum staff and helps supervise library volunteers.

Key Responsibilities

· Reviews donated materials, deaccessions duplicates, and catalogs acquisitions, creating both physical and digital finding aids.

· Catalogs and writes and/or updates finding aids for older materials and maps in the collection.

· Provide reference service, conduct research, and assist patrons during library appointments.

· Conduct library orientation sessions for students and informational sessions for public groups

· Train and supervise library volunteers as they assist in collections management and library research

· Occasional assistance with programming and fundraisers

· Work schedule: Tuesday – Saturday, 32.5 hour workweek

Qualifications

· Degree in library science or a related field or related experience

· Strong background in collections management

· Excellent research and writing skills

· Strong organizational skills

· Ability to work collaboratively with staff, volunteers, and donors

Salary and Benefits

Physical requirements

Ability to bend, reach, and lift up to 40 pounds.

Ability to climb one or two steps to reach heavy materials on high shelves

Overview of the Marquette Regional History Center & JM Longyear Research Library

The Marquette Regional History Center (MRHC) is a 501c3, private non-profit organization established as the Marquette County Historical Society in 1918. The MRHC maintains an active programming calendar, an extensive permanent collection and a museum store. The permanent collection includes artifacts from prehistoric copper culture through present times. The main exhibit gallery highlights natural resources, Native American culture, immigration, and community, while rotating special exhibits explore topics of regional interest. The MRHC also rents the facility for special events such as weddings.

The J.M. Longyear Research Library contains more than 16,000 titles, including rare books and primary source materials by early surveyors, pioneer settlers, business leaders, and community developers. The collection also includes over 10,000 photographic images, manuscripts, scrapbooks, newspapers, current event files, magazines, diaries, correspondence, business ledgers, personal papers, genealogy sources and much more. The map collection holds more than 1,000 items, from 19th Century hand-drawn maps to the latest atlas of Marquette County.
