Title: Area Manager

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS: Under the general direction of the Region Director, is responsible for ensuring the quality of programming, recreation, facilities, and ground maintenance for an assigned area of parks and play lots, through supervision of staff development and administrative responsibilities. Maintains constant contact with park supervisors and staff. Performs related duties as assigned or required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides management support for park supervisors, instructors, and other staff involved in the operation of all parks and play lots in the area assigned.
  • Coaches and evaluates park supervisors on their management of parks.
  • Makes regular visits to parks to monitor the quality of programming and staff performance based on established performance measures, including youth program quality assessments, customer surveys, community feedback, and evaluation.
  • Communicates best and recommended practices in programming, instruction, and administrative processes.
  • Works closely with finance and human resource managers to ensure proper support and training for park supervisors.
  • Works with the Community Recreation department to ensure administration of citywide recreation opportunities.
  • Works with park supervisors to prioritize facilities management and landscape management work orders and repairs.
  • Attends advisory council meetings; maintains contact with community leaders and groups.
  • Works closely with region managers, finance managers, and park supervisors to establish budgets for each park and play lot.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Training and Experience: A Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Education, or a related field, plus five years of supervisory or managerial experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required. A Master’s Degree is preferred. Experience in recreation or field operations is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of personnel management techniques, including disciplinary processes. Knowledge of budget preparation and administration. Ability to relate constructively with community representatives. Management skills. Strong supervisory skills. Problem-solving, decision making, and leadership skills. Strong written and oral communication skills. Strong computer skills.
