Assistant Clerk of Court

Job Overview
Under general supervision, performs a variety of clerical and administrative duties in support of the Municipal Court. Work involves receipting fine payments, preparing reports, maintaining court calendars, and coordinating court-related functions and activities.

This position requires a high level of accuracy, confidentiality, and customer service while working in a fast-paced environment.

Reports to the Clerk of Court and Municipal Judge.

Responsibilities

  • ● Files and prepares tickets for court dockets

● Assists with receipting fines, fees, and restitution payments; prepares weekly bank deposits

● Assists with preparation of inmate release forms and calculation of outstanding balances

● Assists with jury selection processes, including generating jury lists and preparing/mailing jury summons

● Maintains and updates jury trial calendars

● Notifies officers, witnesses, defendants, attorneys, and other parties of court dates

● Assists with juror compensation processing

● Assists Clerk of Court during municipal court proceedings, including:

○ Recording fines, sentences, and case information

○ Preparing commitment forms

○ Processing payments received during court

○ Preparing purchase orders and vouchers for refunds

○ Recording court proceedings and bench trials

● Files and prepares tickets for court dockets

● Assists with receipting fines, fees, and restitution payments; prepares weekly bank deposits

● Assists with preparation of inmate release forms and calculation of outstanding balances

● Assists with jury selection processes, including generating jury lists and preparing/mailing jury summons

● Maintains and updates jury trial calendars

● Notifies officers, witnesses, defendants, attorneys, and other parties of court dates

● Assists with juror compensation processing

● Assists with scheduling preliminary hearings and notifying all relevant parties (Public Defender, arresting officer, Jail Administrator, etc.)

● Prepares case files and ensures recording systems are ready for hearings

● Receives General Sessions warrants, tickets, bonds, and related documentation; prepares transmittals to County Clerk of Court

● Maintains records for defendants enrolled in PTI (Pre-Trial Intervention) programs

● Utilizes court management software (e.g., LawTrack) and standard office software (Microsoft Office Suite)

● Interacts professionally with defendants, attorneys, bondsmen, law enforcement, court officials, and the general public

Additional Job Functions

● Performs general clerical duties including typing, filing, copying, data entry, and mail processing

● Answers telephone and provides information to the public

● Attends required training and continuing education

● Performs related duties as assigned

Minimum Training and Experience

● Associate’s degree in business, paralegal studies, or a related field; and

● Six (6) months to one (1) year of clerical, legal, or administrative experience; or

● Any equivalent combination of education and experience

Must possess a valid South Carolina driver’s license.

Minimum Qualifications

● Knowledge of municipal court procedures and legal terminology preferred

● Strong organizational and record-keeping skills

● Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information

● Strong attention to detail and accuracy

● Ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups of people

● Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines

Physical Requirements

● Ability to operate standard office equipment (computer, copier, calculator, etc.)

● Ability to sit, stand, and perform light physical activity as required

● Occasionally lift up to 20 pounds

Pay: $16.00 - $19.00 per hour
