POSITION OVERVIEW
The Assistant Controller will be a critical addition to Northstar’s accounting team, supporting executive leadership in establishing a scalable, best-in-class accounting function. This role is ideal for a driven accounting professional with construction industry experience who is ready to take on increasing responsibility and grow into the Controller role as the company expands.

The Assistant Controller will be both hands-on and forward-looking - executing core accounting tasks while helping to implement process improvements, strengthen controls, and build the foundation for a high-performing finance function.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Financial Operations & Reporting

• Manage core accounting functions, including A/P, A/R, payroll oversight, job costing, G/L management, reconciliations, and month-end close.
• Establish standardized month-end close procedures with a 5-day close timeline.
• Prepare and deliver clean, audit-ready financial statements (P&L, Balance Sheet, cash flow).
• Support executive leadership with accurate forecasting, cash flow management, and financial insights.

Construction Accounting

• Implement and maintain a job costing dashboard for accurate, real-time tracking.
• Oversee job cost integrity, commitments, and change orders.
• Support preparation of Work-in-Progress (WIP) reports and monthly project projections.
• Manage AIA billing, subcontractor invoicing, retainage, and lien waivers.
• Partner with Project Managers to reconcile budgets and ensure accurate job reporting.

Process Improvement & Team Development

• Build and mentor accounting team capable of independently managing daily functions.
• Identify workflow gaps and implement process improvements to streamline operations.
• Support the development of financial dashboards and KPIs to improve visibility for leadership.
• Help shape scalable systems and practices that will support Northstar’s growth.

Leadership & Growth Track

• Report directly to executive leadership, providing transparency and accountability.
• Take ownership of accounting processes while preparing for a transition into the Controller role.
• Embody Northstar’s values, contributing to a culture of integrity, care, and collaboration.
• Partner with leadership to align financial systems with long-term business strategy.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
• 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, with construction industry experience required (job costing, WIP reporting).
• Proficiency in construction accounting software (Deltek ComputerEase strongly preferred).
• Demonstrated ability to implement process improvements and streamline workflows.
• Strong communication skills with a hands-on, team-oriented approach.
• High integrity, accountability, and problem-solving ability.
• Desire and capacity to grow into the Controller role as Northstar continues to scale.
