This Assistant County Attorney position will be a position within the civil and criminal divisions, with practice in the areas of juvenile delinquency prosecution and civil assignments. Caseload emphasis will be determined by qualifications in these practice areas.

Sherburne County Attorney's Office is seeking a motivated candidate to join our team. The civil division attorneys handle a variety of areas with the development of a subject matter expertise. We seek an individual who desires to work in a collaborative environment. The Office invests in training and professional growth. Our new Courthouse and office are in Elk River, Minnesota; close to the Twin Cities providing access to all of the amenities but foregoing the traffic. Come grow with our dynamic community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

These examples of typical duties do not include all possible tasks for this classification and do not limit the assignment of related tasks. Regular attendance according to the department's approved work schedule is required for all Sherburne County positions.
  • Prosecute juvenile delinquency matters (petty misdemeanors, misdemeanors, gross misdemeanors and felonies) through all stages of proceedings
  • Handle probation violations, Extended Jurisdiction Juvenile (EJJ) and certification proceedings
  • Work with criminal justice partners (corrections, health and human services, and law enforcement).
  • Review contracts and other agreements.
  • Provide counsel to department heads and staff
  • Review and respond to data practice requests
  • Appear in court on behalf of county clients
  • Assist with legal research on felonies, gross misdemeanors, criminal appeals and civil files.
  • Other duties as assigned by the County Attorney or Chief Deputy County Attorney.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college or university.
Juris Doctorate degree obtained after successful course of study at an accredited law school. Admission to the Minnesota State Bar.
The County will consider candidates who have taken the bar exam and are awaiting results.

Required to pass a background check, pass an on-line security test for CJDN access and be fingerprinted.

Valid Minnesota Driver's License required.
In addition to minimum qualifications, an individual must meet the minimum experience qualifications as stated below to qualify for an Assistant County Attorney I, II, or III position:

Assistant County Attorney I
  • Pay Grade 17: $91,695 - $128,439
Minimum qualification for the position requires one to three years of directly related employment experience.

Assistant County Attorney II
  • Pay Grade 18: $98,114 - $137,426
Minimum qualification for the position requires three to seven years directly related employment experience.

Assistant County Attorney III
  • Pay Grade 20: $115,482 - $161,741
Minimum qualification for the position requires seven or more years directly related employment experience.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Preferred candidates will have two or more years of experience as a licensed attorney.
  • Experience working in a county attorney's office (or equivalent in Minnesota or another state).
  • Knowledge of:
    • Applicable court rules of procedure and the rules of evidence
    • Applicable areas of law, including public contracting and procurement, real estate, data practices, and civil litigation.
    • The pleading and practice of effective presentation of court cases
  • Abilities:
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
    • Persuasive public speaking skills
    • Effective working relationships and collaboration with other county departments
    • Analyze and apply legal principles to specific situations and issues
