Assistant Daycare Director

Position Overview:
The Assistant Director at The Gingerbread House (GBH) is a leadership role that is primarily classroom-based. This position is designed for a hands-on leader who is actively involved in daily operations, teaching, and staff support. The Assistant Director will spend the majority of the day in ratio, supporting classrooms, maintaining structure, and ensuring the center runs smoothly.

This is not an office-based position. The ideal candidate must be comfortable working directly with children, stepping into classrooms as needed, and leading by example.

Key Responsibilities:

• Work in classrooms daily as a lead or support teacher while maintaining ratio
• Step into classrooms as needed for coverage, call-offs, and transitions
• Support classroom management and ensure staff are following routines and expectations
• Assist with implementing curriculum and ensuring lesson plans are completed and prepared in advance
• Monitor classroom cleanliness, organization, and daily sanitizing procedures
• Help enforce GBH policies, procedures, and DCFS licensing standards
• Provide guidance, redirection, and support to staff throughout the day
• Assist with managing daily operations, including staff breaks, classroom coverage, and transitions
• Communicate with parents as needed in a professional and supportive manner
• Support enrollment efforts and maintain a welcoming environment for families

Qualifications:

• Valid Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential required, or DCFS-certified.
• Previous experience in a childcare setting required
• Leadership or supervisory experience preferred
• Strong classroom management skills
• Ability to multitask and adapt in a fast-paced environment
• CPR/First Aid Certification (or willingness to obtain)

Expectations:

• Must be comfortable working in classrooms for the majority of the shift
• Must be proactive and step in where needed without direction
• Maintain professionalism and consistency when addressing staff and children
• Be actively engaged throughout the day
• Support the Director in maintaining structure, accountability, and a positive work environment
• Be reliable, punctual, and solution-oriented

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to stand, bend, and move throughout the day
• Comfortable working both indoors and outdoors

Important Note:
This role is designed for someone who leads by example and is actively present in the classroom environment. Candidates seeking a primarily administrative or office-based position will not be a good fit for this role.

Pay: $18.00 - $19.25 per hour
