Assistant Director of Communications and College Editor

Eckerd College is currently hiring for the position of Assistant Director of Communications and College Editor at our waterfront property along the Boca Ciega Bay in St. Petersburg, Florida, in our relationship-focused community.


As the Assistant Director of Communications and College Editor, you will manage, edit and supplement content for high-impact presidential, divisional and programmatic publications for digital and print media including College news stories, admission publications, and e-newsletters. The College Editor also reviews internal and external communications following the College’s writing style guidelines and manages print projects involving the Marketing and Communications teams.


The role requires the incumbent to have proven editorial and proofreading skills, with proficiency in AP style and familiarity with Chicago Manual of Style (for book projects). The Assistant Director of Communications and College Editor must be proficient in digital content management, project management, text editing and fundraising software and have superior written and verbal communication skills.

Key Responsibilities

  • Edit high-impact communications, marketing materials, publications, and media for the Admission, Advancement and President’s offices and other College divisions.
  • Manage print projects from setting the timeline and assigning responsibilities to draft stage to production.
  • Edit, update and manage content across official Eckerd College websites using the College’s content management system.
  • Draft short communications such as photo captions, slogans, catch phrases, callouts and descriptive/bio blurbs for digital and print pieces in coordination with the Director of Digital Strategy.
  • Maintain accurate and current College statistics for revisions to print and digital design materials, especially for the Offices of Admission and Advancement.
  • Work closely with the Board Secretary to maintain the Board Directory and the ceremonial Board communications, including, but not limited to resolutions and citations.
  • Periodically update and steadfastly promote the Eckerd College Writing Style Guide.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in communication, journalism, creative writing, literature or comparable.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted in lieu of degree.
  • Minimum three (3) years of relevant experience in a communications office (college or university office preferred).
