Assistant Director of Outreach, Operations & Lab Technician - Norwich University

Fulfills the mission of Norwich University by managing operations of the Cyber Institute, including information management, program coordination, assessment, and outreach for K-12 teachers and students run by the Leahy School.

The position is funded by the DoD SMC Cyber Institute Grants and is expected to continue through at least 2027.

Essential Functions

  • Manages the daily operations of the Cyber Institute.
    • Tracks all Cyber Leader student activities and reports to the Director.
    • Coordinating with Cyber faculty and staff.
  • Works with Director, Deans, ROTC Commanders, and Career Center to identify and recruit current students for DOD Cyber Institute program.
  • Collects data for assessment.
  • Tracks expenses.
  • Maintains Cyber Institute Excel spreadsheets and SharePoint sites, and tracking and reporting information for the Director.
  • Coordinates with local and regional schools and organizations (e.g. Girl Scouts, Scouting America, JROTC, Civil Air Patrol) to organize outreach activities for grades 7-12 teachers and students.
  • Coordinates on-campus and external internships.
  • Maintains communications including web content and a newsletter for the Cyber Institute.
  • Advises the Cyber Institute students for Cyber Competency Skills and Certification Exams.
  • Coordinates with the Office of Strategic Partnerships for program guidance and requirements.
  • Be available in the lab for 2 hours per week to mentor and supervise student activities in a face-to-face or virtual mode.
  • Attends Unit 1819/CTF/CLDP meetings once or twice per month during the evening.
  • Makes equipment purchase recommendations for the CLDP lab based on the goals set forth here.
  • Provides tech support and training for HTB (Hack the Box) in the lab.
  • Provide guidance and supervision for student success using the HTB platform.
  • Serves as a liaison between the Leahy Faculty and the students for HTB inclusion in the curriculum.
  • Coordinates student research projects by serving as a liaison between Norwich faculty and students.

  • Maintains confidentiality of sensitive or private information.
  • Communicates with employees, students, and others in a respectful and clear manner.
  • Serves on University committees, councils, workgroups, or other designated bodies as assigned.
  • Achieves, maintains proficiency in, and utilizes computers, telephones, and other job-related equipment, including related systems and software.
  • Speaks, reads, and writes in English.
  • Communicates by telephone, email, letter, in person, or other means or device.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned by supervisor.

Job Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in a Computer Science/Cyber/IT-related discipline required. Master's or Doctoral degree preferred.
  • Military and/or industry experience in cyber operations
  • Project management experience preferred.
  • Ability to advise undergraduate students.
  • Ability to teach introductory computer science or cybersecurity courses a plus.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, SharePoint, Teams, and Outlook)
  • Able to sit, squat, reach, push, pull, and manipulate related equipment; lift 25 pounds; travel outdoors to various parts of the campus
  • Work some evening or weekend hours
  • Travel as needed (public or private transportation)

Environmental Conditions

  • Indoor work at a computer workstation
  • Low level of exposure to noise, dust, fumes, vibrations, and temperature changes.
