JOB DESCRIPTION: ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF SPECIAL SERVICES

SALARY SCHEDULE: ASSISTANT DIRECTOR

DEPARTMENT: SPECIAL SERVICES

FLSA STATUS: EXEMPT

POSITION SUMMARY:

Responsible for the development and implementation of a comprehensive system to provide services to all eligible children and families as required by the Individual with Disabilities Education Act. Responsible for the recommendations of staffing to implement the services required by students on IEP/504 plans. Responsible for the oversight of data collection and reporting procedures required to demonstrate that the District is in compliance with the state-established performance criteria for special education. Responsible for compliance with state and federal laws and Mid-Del school district policies. Responsible for developing and fostering positive working relationships with school, district, parents, and community agencies. At all times, serve as an advocate of children with disabilities in the design and implementation of district-wide policies and procedures for the department.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
  • Master's degree + 30 in special education, education administration, or school psychology.
  • Five years experience in district level special education administration, coordination or facilitation.
  • A valid Standard Oklahoma Special Education Certificate and Administrative Certificate.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide supervision to Certified School Psychologists, Psychometrist, Speech Language Pathologist Special Services Consultants, Physical Therapist, Occupational Therapist, Certified Occupational Assistants, Clerical staff and other district personnel as designated by the superintendent.
  • Assist with monitoring and ensuring compliance with Special Education class sizes pursuant to federal and state laws.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of a professional development plan for Special Education staff as required by Oklahoma State Department of Education.
  • Develop and implement procedures for the identification and placement of eligible students in appropriate special education programs.
  • Conduct an annual survey of needs and prepare a budget for the Extended School Year (ESY) program for eligible students.
  • Respond to Parent's requests for mediation and formal hearings; represent and/or assist the district's legal counsel in preparing for formal hearings and lawsuits.
  • Maintain all records and the comprehensive computer database necessary to complete the annual child counts and other state and federal reports required by the Oklahoma State Department of Education.
  • Communicate, collaborate, and coordinate to ensure that timelines are adhered to in the identification and IEP development process of eligible students.
  • Assume responsibility for own professional growth and development; for keeping current with the literature, new research, and improved techniques; and for attending appropriate professional meetings and conventions.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
