The Lamb Center (TLC) is a daytime drop-in shelter for individuals experiencing homelessness in Fairfax, VA. It provides a variety of services free of charge to guests, including breakfast, lunch, showers, laundry, Bible study, case management, AA meetings, a nurse practitioner clinic, a dental clinic, and more. TLC is a Christian, ecumenical community of faith that partners with local churches, public agencies, and other organizations committed to serving our unhoused neighbors with dignity and compassion.

About the Assistant Director of Strategic Communications

The Assistant Director of Strategic Communications will lead the development and execution of a comprehensive communications and engagement strategy that advances the Lamb Center’s mission and amplifies the impact of its ministry. This role is responsible for communicating the Center’s work and outcomes through effective management of digital and print channels, including the website, social media, and email marketing. The individual will serve as the primary staff lead for the Center’s Community Engagement Taskforce, coordinating with key community partners, stakeholders, and supporters to strengthen relationships, visibility, and alignment with the Center’s mission.

The ideal candidate will have exceptional writing and editing skills, a strong understanding of major social media platforms, and a passion for mission-driven storytelling. This full-time, exempt, and hybrid position collaborates closely with the Director of Development and reports to the Executive Director. Successful candidates will fully support the mission, vision, and values of the Lamb Center.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute a strategic communications and engagement plan aligned with the Lamb Center’s mission and priorities
  • Lead creation and dissemination of compelling, mission-driven content across digital and print channels, including the website, social media, email, and collateral materials
  • Ensure consistent messaging, voice, and brand alignment across all communications
  • Design and support external engagement efforts with key community partners, stakeholders, and supporters—serving as the primary staff lead for the Community Engagement Taskforce—and actively collaborate with communications counterparts at partner agencies to coordinate joint messaging, develop and distribute shared press releases, and strengthen aligned public outreach
  • Manage media relations, including press outreach, inquiries, and leadership preparation as needed
  • Produce weekly social media posts, monthly e-newsletters, and semiannual appeals
  • Collaborate closely with the Director of Development to support fundraising, donor engagement, and stewardship communications
  • Manage communications consultants and vendors to ensure quality, timeliness, and alignment with organizational goals
  • Monitor performance metrics and adjust strategies to improve reach, engagement, and effectiveness
  • Collaborate with program staff to gather stories, data, and insights that inform communications and outreach efforts
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications for Communications Manager

  • 2-3 years nonprofit experience
  • 7+ years of progressive experience working in a strategic communications role
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong graphic design skills
  • Direct community engagement experience
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills and ability to meet deadlines
  • Ability to work both strategically and hands-on
  • Capable of working well with a team as well as independently
  • Demonstrated experience managing digital communications channels including WordPress, social media, and email marketing

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods
  • Ability to lift items weighing 10-20 pounds
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboards
  • Occasional exposure to loud, hectic environment and possible contact with individuals in crisis who may not be attentive to basic personal hygiene, health, and safety practices

Pay: $75,000.00 - $85,000.00 per year
