Assistant District Attorney for District Court

The Cape and Islands District Attorney's Office serves all of the people of the Cape and Islands with offices in Barnstable, Orleans, Falmouth, Edgartown and Nantucket. We are seeking an Assistant District Attorney for the District Court.

The Assistant District Attorney – District Court represents the Commonwealth in accordance with the District Attorney’s statutory authority in the various courts for the Cape and Island District, the Appeals Court and the Supreme Judicial Court. The Assistant District Attorney – District Court is an employee of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and serves at the pleasure of the District Attorney.

Responsibilities

  • Represent the Commonwealth in district court by prosecuting criminal cases including presenting evidence and argument at arraignments, preliminary hearings, pre-trial conferences, hearings on motions, trials, and sentencing.
  • Conduct legal research and draft legal documents as needed.
  • Prepare victims and witnesses for potential testimony in trials and motion hearings.
  • Regularly review court decisions and legislation affecting Massachusetts law
  • Collaborate with victim witness advocates, law enforcement, court personnel, the defense bar, criminal justice agencies and members of the public.
  • Represent the Commonwealth in specialty courts, including mental health and recovery court.
  • Represent the Commonwealth in Juvenile court when needed by prosecuting delinquency cases including presenting evidence and argument at arraignments, preliminary hearings, pre-trial conferences, hearings on motions, trials, and sentencing.
  • Participate in office facilitated trainings and professional development opportunities when available.
  • Work closely with colleagues, office staff, victim witness advocates, law enforcement officers, court personnel, criminal justice agencies, community partners, and the public to ensure an ethical, effective, fair, and professional approach to prosecution on behalf of victims and the communities we serve.
  • Perform any other duties at any jobsite assigned by the District Attorney, the First Assistant District Attorney or other designee of the District Attorney.

Qualifications

  • Strong written and oral advocacy skills.
  • Requires excellent communication skills and the ability to share and provide information in a clear, articulate, and timely manner.
  • Commitment to fostering and contributing to a positive, collaborative working environment.
  • Ability to prioritize time sensitive matters and ensure that all deadlines are met.
  • Self-starter with the following attributes: sharp attention to detail, ability to exercise discretion with confidential information, ability to contribute and work as part of a team, positive attitude and willingness to learn new processes and to adapt to new procedures and protocols as needed.
  • Juris Doctorate, license to practice law in MA and in good standing with the Board of Bar Overseers.
  • two to three years relevant experience preferred.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $76,000.00 - $80,000.00 per year
