Assistant Fire Chief

Assists the Fire Chief in managing and directing the Fire Department; plans, organizes and directs technical, management, and administrative work involved in commanding and coordinating fire emergency activities, fire prevention and education, apparatus maintenance and fire inspection and investigation activities; provides highly complex staff assistance to the Fire Chief. Work is generally supervisory and technical in nature and involves a great deal of variety. Each situation presents unique demands which add to the overall complexity of the job.



Qualifications

1. High School diploma or equivalent; 2. Ten (10) years of experience in the fire service, which includes at least two (2) years of increasingly responsible command and supervisory experience in an organized career fire department. Graduation from an accredited college or university in fire science, fire technology or fire administration, with an associates or bachelor’s degree, may substitute for up to four (4) years’ experience. 3. Must have at time of hire OR obtain within six months of hire, New Mexico Class E (CDL-Exempt) driver’s license, and be insurable by the City’s vehicle insurance provider 4. Required certifications at time of hire: a. New Mexico EMT-I (intermediate) or equivalent b. IFSAC Firefighter II or equivalent c. IFSAC Fire Officer I or equivalent d. IFSAC Fire Instructor I or equivalent Preferred: 5. Incident command and incident management certification
