Summary
Responsible learning and executing all basic hog procurement tasks. The Assistant Hog Procurement Manager is responsible for supporting the Hog Procurement Team with meeting plant supply needs for hogs at a competitive cost. This is a basic entry level livestock procurement management position that will learn procurement at all levels.

Education, Licensure and Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year college or university or 2 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
    • Prior knowledge of the pork or food industry.
    • Advanced mathematical, quantitative, and analytical skills.
    • Understands system capabilities and finds ways to improve system performance.
    • Capability to synthesize data from multiple resources to build actionable recommendations.
    • Effective critical thinking, decision making, and problem-solving skills.
    • Economic and math skills, and the ability to analyze information and data.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
include the following (Please note: This in no way states or implies that these are the only duties you will be required to perform. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position. Other duties may be assigned as deemed necessary and appropriate.):

  • Manage load scheduling and information from booking through delivery in the company’s procurement system, ensuring accuracy and communicating to team/producers/logistics managers any relevant information or discrepancies.
  • Perform data entry for negotiated purchases as needed.
  • Monitor and report compliance against Hog Procurement Agreement standards.
  • Aid and provide guidance to yard supervision.
  • Plans and organizes the key initiatives related to the procurement function across the department.
  • Develops and maintains hog procurement reporting to include daily weekly, and monthly reports.
  • Ability to utilize data and transpose it into action items that can be executed by the Hog Procurement team.
  • Communicates with the Hog Procurement leadership team to identify project objectives and status.
  • Utilizes technology to demonstrate where opportunities exist to improve business.
  • Manages and promotes regulatory compliance requirements to employees and suppliers.
  • Responsible for monitoring and ensuring agreed upon obligations are met between the Company and suppliers.
  • Understands and interprets markets and establishes excellent business relationships with producers to support the procurement of hogs with suppliers.
  • Follow hog handling directives and procedures to comply with company Animal Welfare policies and procedures as well as FSIS directives, this includes annual training on these policies
  • Learn the proper counting, identification, and classification of hogs.
  • Review daily delivery commitments to determine that all information is correct pertaining to trucking, arrival times, site name and premises ID.
  • Responsible for ante-mortem inspection and live hog monitoring as required under USDA guidance, including Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point documentation.
  • Always represent the company in a professional manner.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities
Provides leadership and guidance to the Livestock Lead, Swine Receiving Specialists, Trainers, and employees in the hog lairage area. Carries out supervisory responsibilities when applicable in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.

When necessary, supervises employees in the office to ensure quality service in accordance with the Personnel Manual and applicable laws. Responsibilities include but are not limited:
  • Assists in addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Support planning and directing work schedules to assign and coordinate the work of employees to promote efficiency of operations and in accordance with budgeted hours, ensuring that all duties are performed – work assignments to assist staff in completing and performing such tasks.
  • Assists in monitoring turnover rates, employee surveys, and grievances to identify and address trends and/or critical indicators.

Language Skills
Must be able to read, write, speak and understand the language of the majority cultural group in order to communicate effectively and able to hear enough to understand those individuals as well. Ability to read, interpret, and comprehend documents such as graphs/flow sheets, financials, general professional articles and publications, governmental regulations, safety rules, assignment sheets, and procedure manuals. Must be able to write reports, business correspondence, policies and procedures, and other administrative forms as outlined above.

Must be able to effectively communicate in both individual and group settings. Must be able to present information and respond to questions from individuals and/or groups including, employees, managers.

Mathematical Skills
In order to perform duties, must be able to:
  • Add, subtract, multiply, and divide all units of measure such as whole numbers, fractions, percentages, and fractions.
  • Compute rate, discounts, ratios, and percent, and
  • Make, read, and interpret financials, graphs, rates, ratios, and percentages.

Reasoning Ability
Ability to apply common sense and judgment in solving problems and interpreting and understanding instructions furnished in written or oral form. Must be able to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action yet reason when to involve supervisor.

Computer Skills
Moderate computer knowledge with the ability to learn software.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

The work environment will include wet or humid conditions, extreme cold and heat, hog dander and odors. Noise level in the work environment is usually high. Frequently maneuver market sized non-ambulatory market sized hogs, up to 325 pounds, into and out of animal handling equipment as determined by the state of the hog. Frequently lift/move/carry up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision and ability to adjust focus. Frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear.
