Assistant Landscape Designer

Arterra is looking for an assistant landscape designer to help design and manage the construction of projects including rain gardens, conservation landscaping, outdoor carpentry and hardscaping at residential properties throughout the DC metro area.

This position requires a highly motivated candidate with strong communication and interpersonal skills, impeccable attention to detail, and interest in the environment/landscape design/entrepreneurship.

A sense of humor and intellectual curiosity are key to success in this role. A candidate who is flexible and thinks strategically will thrive in this position.

This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated candidate to expand their knowledge and skills in the landscape design/build and environmental industry. The assistant will work closely with other team members, partners such as the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay and DC DOEE, Montgomery County Rainscapes, plant/shrub/tree growers and our wonderful clients.

Job Responsibilities

  • Take field measurements and prepare base maps, planting plans and master plans that include rain gardens, bayscaping, hardscaping, outdoor carpentry and stormwater systems.
  • Calculate plan take-offs, prepare cost estimates, and compose proposals and contracts for projects.
  • Source high quality materials including trees, shrubs, perennial plants, and stone from multiple vendors.
  • Communicate regularly with clients during design and installation process
  • Manage production schedule and coordinate field logistics for projects
  • Assist in procuring necessary permits
  • Coordinate job details with foremen of in house crews and subcontractors
  • Site layout and placing plants for installation crews
  • Create social media content and newsletters

Requirements

  • 2 or more years of experience preferred
  • Excellent written, verbal and graphic communication skills
  • Attention to detail, sense of humor and positive energy
  • Reliable transportation, clean driving record
  • Creativity and eye for composition
  • Intellectual curiosity and eagerness to learn
  • Superior time management/organization skills
  • Interest in plants/landscape design/entrepreneurship.

Strongly desired

  • Use of Adobe Illustrator or SketchUp, or willingness to learn
  • Experience with landscape design, social media, business, construction and/or horticulture
  • Degree in landscape design/architecture, business, environmental science, etc.
  • Photography/Videography skills
