Position Summary

Hembree Cargo Inc. is seeking a dependable, motivated, and leadership-minded Assistant Manager to support the daily execution of our Murfreesboro delivery operation.

The Assistant Manager will work directly with the General Manager and company leadership to help oversee drivers, route readiness, vehicle availability, safety compliance, service execution, driver communication, and daily operational performance. This position plays a key role in ensuring that the operation runs efficiently, drivers are prepared, vehicles are ready, and all routes are completed safely and successfully.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone with transportation, logistics, package delivery, fleet, dispatch, or leadership experience who wants to grow into a larger management role. The ideal candidate is organized, reliable, calm under pressure, and willing to lead from the front.

The Assistant Manager will be employed by Hembree Cargo Inc., an independent FedEx Ground contractor. This position is not employment with FedEx.

Key ResponsibilitiesDaily Operations Support

  • Assist the General Manager with the daily execution of the delivery operation.
  • Help ensure all routes are properly staffed, vehicles are ready, drivers are prepared, and daily service obligations are met.
  • Support morning dispatch, route assignments, driver check-ins, package readiness, and communication with drivers.
  • Monitor daily route progress and assist with resolving operational issues, delays, missed stops, service concerns, vehicle problems, or staffing challenges.
  • Communicate clearly with drivers, the General Manager, terminal staff, dispatch, and company leadership regarding daily operational needs.
  • Help ensure the completion of all routes before the end of the service day.
  • Assist with daily morning meetings, operational updates, and driver communication.

Driver Leadership and Accountability

  • Support the management, coaching, and development of delivery drivers.
  • Reinforce company expectations related to attendance, safety, professionalism, customer service, route execution, and vehicle care.
  • Assist with driver onboarding, training, ride-alongs, coaching, and performance follow-up.
  • Help identify performance concerns and communicate them to the General Manager.
  • Lead by example and maintain a professional, respectful, and accountable work environment.
  • Support employee morale by communicating clearly, solving problems quickly, and helping drivers understand expectations.

Safety and Compliance

  • Promote a safety-first culture throughout the operation.
  • Ensure drivers complete required pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections.
  • Help monitor driver safety, vehicle condition, safe driving practices, and compliance with company standards.
  • Report unsafe behavior, vehicle concerns, incidents, accidents, injuries, customer complaints, or service issues promptly to the General Manager.
  • Assist with documenting safety concerns, inspection issues, incident reports, and operational follow-up.
  • Reinforce company policies, safety procedures, and applicable transportation requirements.

Fleet and Vehicle Readiness

  • Assist with confirming that vehicles are safe, operational, properly equipped, and ready for daily dispatch.
  • Communicate vehicle repair needs, maintenance issues, and downtime concerns to the General Manager or designated maintenance contact.
  • Help coordinate vehicle swaps, spare vehicle usage, and contingency plans when vehicles are unavailable.
  • Support basic fleet organization, vehicle cleanliness expectations, and daily readiness checks.
  • Help track and communicate recurring vehicle issues that could affect service performance.

Administrative and Back-Office Support

  • Assist with daily administrative tasks required to support the operation.
  • Help maintain accurate records related to attendance, route completion, inspections, service issues, vehicle concerns, and driver communication.
  • Support payroll review, onboarding documentation, safety documentation, incident reporting, and other operational records as directed.
  • Assist with reporting, follow-up, and completion of required FedEx-related tasks and company administrative responsibilities.
  • Help monitor performance metrics and communicate opportunities for improvement to the General Manager.

Contingency and Route Support

  • Assist with route coverage, vehicle movement, driver support, package handling, or operational recovery when business needs require.
  • Help respond to route disruptions, callouts, weather issues, vehicle breakdowns, peak volume, and other time-sensitive operational needs.
  • Maintain flexibility and urgency to protect service quality and daily completion.

Qualifications

  • Prior experience in transportation, logistics, package delivery, dispatch, fleet operations, warehouse operations, or team leadership preferred.
  • FedEx Ground, UPS, Amazon DSP, courier, trucking, parcel delivery, or last-mile logistics experience strongly preferred.
  • Prior management, assistant management, lead driver, dispatcher, BC, or operational leadership experience is a plus.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work professionally with drivers, managers, terminal staff, vendors, and company leadership.
  • Ability to stay organized and make sound decisions in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to respond quickly to operational challenges.
  • Dependable, punctual, and able to hold others accountable while maintaining professionalism.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Must have an acceptable motor vehicle record if driving duties are required.
  • Must be able to complete all required post-offer screening and eligibility requirements, which may include a background check, motor vehicle record review, drug screen, and DOT physical/medical certification if applicable.
  • Ability to occasionally assist with route operations, vehicle movement, package handling, or delivery support when business needs require, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to lift, move, or assist with packages up to 150 lbs. with appropriate equipment, including a hand truck, when operationally necessary.

Work Schedule

This is a full-time leadership position. The Assistant Manager should expect to work 5–6 days per week, including weekends when required by business needs.

Typical start time is approximately 7:00 AM. End time will vary based on daily route completion, operational needs, staffing, service performance, and required administrative responsibilities.
