Assistant Manager Hourly

PROBATIONARY PERIOD: 60 Days

POSITION TITLE: Assistant Manager TRAINING PERIOD: 90 Days

DEPARTMENT: Corporate Operations STARTING WAGE: $12-14/hr +Tips

REPORTS TO: Cafe Manager DETAILS: Full Time

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Assistant Manager position maintains a strong emphasis on leadership, training, and coffee knowledge. This role works in partnership with the Café Manager to ensure that daily operations run smoothly and efficiently. The Assistant Manager is responsible for task delegation and deployment of baristas to create and maintain hospitality in the café while supporting the needs of business levels.

The Assistant Manager is also responsible for vendor order fulfillment, barista development and coaching, and contributing to a positive and professional team dynamic. They provide consistent leadership and support to the café team — not only when the Café Manager is off-site, but as an active leadership presence at all times. The Assistant Manager shares responsibility for the overall operations and guest experience within the café.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

TEAMWORK / WORKPLACE DYNAMIC

· Works in tandem with management to onboard and train new baristas and provides continual feedback throughout the process.

· Delegates tasks effectively to ensure even distribution of responsibility

· Communicates with teammates and management to solve problems and improve operational concerns and customer service

· Maintains continuous and effective communication with teammates during peak business hours

· Monitoring labor during shifts, making adjustments as needed based on business levels

· Works with teammates and management to effectively implement change

· Encourages and coaches effectively, in the moment

· Contributes to a positive work environment, leads by example

· Assists in completing opening, closing, or any other task list

· Attend bi-weekly manager meetings, at least one person on the management team is required to be present

· Makes a continuous effort to set and meet goals regarding job skills, knowledge, and continuing education – bi-yearly planning with manager

BENCHMARKS/TRAINING

· Complete a structured 90-day Assistant Manager Training Plan developed by the Training Department and implemented by the Café Manager.

· The plan outlines clear objectives for 30-, 60-, and 90-day milestones, focusing on managerial tasks, onboarding, leadership development, and coffee knowledge.

· Training will take place primarily at the cafe, with an emphasis on hands-on learning, coaching, and daily leadership practice.

· Assistant Managers are encouraged to visit other café locations and work alongside other managers to broaden their experience and strengthen operational consistency across the brand.

· Upon successful completion of the 90-day plan, the Assistant Manager is expected to demonstrate full proficiency in café operations, team leadership, and guest experience standards.

HOSPITALITY / ACCOUNTABILITY

· Greets every guest with a friendly, positive attitude

· Promotes and upholds the values and mission of Port City Java

· Provides superior hospitality and satisfaction on a daily basis by learning guests’ names and regular orders

· Accurately processes orders through POS and counts back change to guests

· Responds appropriately to guest concerns

· Communicates any guest complaints to management and works to ensure guest satisfaction

· Adheres to company dress code as outlined in the Hourly Employee Handbook

· Understands the importance of punctuality; communicates with management if unable to arrive for a scheduled shift on time and works diligently to find and arrange coverage if they have to miss a scheduled shift

· Consistently initiates Suggestive Selling and sampling of products, as well as the Loyalty Program

PRODUCT QUALITY

· Ensures product quality and integrity for all food and beverage being served

· Educates guests on the full menu and is knowledgeable of our coffees

· Maintains high levels of cleanliness and sanitation - follows proper Food Safety regulations as mandated by the Local Health Department

· Adheres to all recipes and guidelines as outlined in the Training Manual

· Responsible for product quality troubleshooting regarding espresso (espresso grind, volume, etc.), coffee (coffee grind, brew volume, etc.), and food (TurboChef/MerryChef oven)

QUALIFICATIONS:

Ø Previous supervisor or management experience not necessary, but preferred

Ø Has completed 60-day probationary period as a barista

Ø Excellent verbal communication, listening, and customer service skills

Ø Fundamental knowledge of workplace safety standards and procedures

Ø Must have the ability to analyze problems and make decisions that will lead to a solution

Ø Must be able to multitask consistently

Ø Must be able to prioritize and delegate effectively

Ø Must be a team player that thrives under pressure while maintaining positive morale and a professional attitude

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

· Must be able to stand or walk for extended periods of time or entire work shift

· Work will require frequent and continual flexing and rotating of wrist and spine

· Work may require, on occasion, the need to lift or otherwise move objects weighing up to 50lbs

· Must be able to determine quality by tastings, cuppings, etc. of various products/recipes related to Port City Java system

o Acting Manager Bonus: A monthly bonus of $300 will be awarded when the Assistant Manager temporarily assumes full Café Manager responsibilities during a period when no Café Manager is in place. This does not apply when covering a Café Manager’s scheduled vacation

o Training Support Bonus: Additional compensation of $20 per shift will be awarded for assuming training responsibilities of Managers in Training. A $20 per shift bonus is also awarded in the event that a member of the Operations team assigns the Assistant Manager to a shift in another café with specific training, leadership or administrative purposes.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $12.00 - $14.00 per hour
