Assistant Manager M&R – Shipping Line

Job Summary

The Assistant Manager M&R – Shipping Line is responsible for managing the maintenance, repair, inspection, and operational condition of containers and related equipment to ensure compliance with international shipping standards and operational efficiency. The role involves coordinating with depots, surveyors, vendors, shipping agents, and operational teams to maintain container quality, minimize repair costs, and ensure equipment availability for smooth shipping operations.

Key Responsibilities

Container Maintenance & Repair Operations

  • Supervise maintenance and repair activities of containers and shipping equipment.
  • Ensure containers are maintained according to shipping line standards and IICL guidelines.
  • Monitor repair quality, turnaround time, and cost efficiency.
  • Coordinate container inspections before and after shipment movement.
  • Ensure damaged containers are repaired promptly to minimize operational delays.
  • Monitor container condition and seaworthiness standards.
  • Handle repair approvals and maintenance authorizations.

Depot & Vendor Coordination

  • Coordinate with container depots regarding repair activities and equipment status.
  • Liaise with repair workshops, vendors, and service providers for maintenance work.
  • Evaluate repair estimates and negotiate repair costs with vendors.
  • Monitor vendor performance, repair quality, and service timelines.
  • Conduct regular depot visits and inspections.
  • Ensure depots maintain operational and safety standards.

Survey & Inspection Management

  • Coordinate container surveys and technical inspections.
  • Review survey reports and approve repair recommendations.
  • Ensure proper documentation of container damages and repair history.
  • Handle joint surveys with customers, depots, or third-party surveyors where required.
  • Monitor container inspection standards and compliance procedures.

Cost Control & Budget Monitoring

  • Monitor M&R expenses and control repair costs effectively.
  • Analyze repair trends and identify opportunities for cost reduction.
  • Ensure repairs are completed within approved budgets.
  • Maintain repair cost records and operational expense reports.
  • Coordinate with finance department regarding vendor invoices and repair payments.

Equipment Control & Monitoring

  • Monitor container inventory condition and equipment availability.
  • Track idle, damaged, under-repair, and operational containers.
  • Ensure timely movement of repaired containers back into operational use.
  • Coordinate repositioning of containers based on operational requirements.
  • Maintain accurate equipment status updates in the system.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Maintain records of repairs, inspections, surveys, and maintenance activities.
  • Prepare M&R reports, damage reports, and cost analysis reports for management.
  • Update container maintenance records in ERP/software systems.
  • Ensure proper filing of technical and operational documentation.
  • Generate operational KPIs and equipment performance reports.

Compliance & Safety

  • Ensure compliance with shipping line standards, safety regulations, and international container repair guidelines.
  • Implement maintenance SOPs and operational best practices.
  • Ensure safe working practices during repair and inspection activities.
  • Support internal and external audits related to M&R operations.
  • Ensure environmental and operational compliance standards are maintained.

Coordination with Internal Departments

  • Coordinate with:
  • Operations Department
  • Equipment Control Team
  • Customer Service
  • Finance Department
  • Depot Teams
  • Technical Vendors
  • Surveyors & Shipping Agents
  • Ensure smooth communication for operational continuity.

Operational Problem Solving

  • Resolve operational issues related to damaged or unavailable containers.
  • Handle urgent repair requirements and operational escalations.
  • Coordinate emergency repair arrangements when required.
  • Minimize operational disruptions through proactive maintenance planning.

Required Skills & Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of container maintenance and repair procedures.
  • Understanding of IICL standards and shipping line operations.
  • Technical understanding of container structures and damages.
  • Vendor management and negotiation skills.
  • Strong analytical and cost control abilities.
  • Problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Good coordination and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of ERP/shipping software and MS Office.
  • Ability to work under pressure in operational environments.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain, Mechanical Engineering, Maritime Studies, Logistics, or related field.
  • 3–6 years of experience in container maintenance & repair, shipping line operations, depot operations, or equipment control.
  • Experience with shipping line or NVOCC operations preferred.
