About the Role:
The Assistant Professor of Practice in Graphic Arts plays a pivotal role in bridging academic theory with practical application in the field of graphic arts. This position primarily supports the Graphic Arts and Design major program, as well as the Photography minor and related programs within the Division of Arts, Media, and Design, housed in the School of Business, Arts, and Sciences. The role is designed to deliver high‑quality instruction in graphic design and digital photography, equipping students with the technical skills and creative insight necessary for success in the evolving visual communications industry.
Responsibilities include developing, enhancing, and teaching undergraduate curricula that reflect current industry standards and emerging technologies, ensuring students are well prepared for professional careers. The Assistant Professor of Practice will also mentor students, fostering artistic development, critical thinking, and professional growth. Collaboration with faculty colleagues and industry partners to strengthen program offerings and contribute to the broader academic community is an essential component of this position.
Faculty benefit from access to extensive, state‑of‑the‑art facilities that support innovative teaching and creative scholarship. Resources include two Mac labs with 42 iMacs, Apple TVs, and full Adobe Creative Suite access; a photography studio with professional digital cameras; a broadcast studio with live editing capabilities; two fully equipped podcast suites; and access to 3D printers and fieldwork cameras. Additional spaces include a fashion lab, flexible and collaborative classrooms, a student digital publication (the Yellow Jacket Digital Magazine), a large gallery with monthly exhibitions, and a 500‑seat proscenium theatre—providing rich opportunities for interdisciplinary teaching and experiential learning.

The required skills of digital photography and Adobe Photoshop are integral to daily teaching and curriculum development, enabling the Assistant Professor to provide hands-on instruction and real-world applications to students. Preferred skills, such as proficiency in additional design software and multimedia tools, enhance the ability to offer a comprehensive educational experience that reflects the multidisciplinary nature of graphic arts. Effective communication and mentorship skills are essential for guiding students through creative challenges and fostering their professional growth. Furthermore, collaboration and adaptability skills support ongoing curriculum innovation and engagement with the broader academic and professional communities.
