Job Summary

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Lamar University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in civil engineering in the area of environmental engineering. This is a 9-month appointment, with a preferred start date of Fall 2026. Candidates with additional expertise in areas such as sustainable infrastructure, air pollution, GIS, remote sensing, hazard resilience, engineering with nature, nature-based solutions, beneficial use of dredged materials, resource recovery, characterization and treatment of emerging contaminants, and related areas are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the teaching, research, and service missions of the department and the professional community. The university offers a dynamic environment for interdisciplinary collaboration across departments, colleges, and industry partners. Faculty have access to a wide range of advanced research facilities that support innovative scholarships and applied research. These include a Structural and Materials Laboratory, a Hydraulics Laboratory, Environmental Engineering Laboratories, a Visualization Laboratory, and a Materials Instrumentation Center. These facilities are designed to accommodate both small- and large-scale experimental work, providing robust support for impactful research and fostering meaningful academic and industry partnerships

Teaching:
  • Develop and deliver undergraduate and graduate courses in Civil and Environmental Engineering, with an emphasis on environmental and sustainability engineering, aligned with the department’s educational goals.
  • Provide effective instruction, academic advising, and mentorship to students.
  • Utilize innovative teaching methods to promote student engagement and success.
Research:
  • Establish and maintain an independent, externally funded research program in environmental and sustainability engineering.
  • Conduct impactful research, publish in peer-reviewed journals, and present findings at national and international conferences.
  • Engage in interdisciplinary collaborations and foster partnerships with industry, government agencies, and other academic institutions.
Service:
  • Contribute to the department, college, and university through service on committees, curriculum development, and participation in accreditation activities.
  • Support outreach and recruitment efforts and represent the department at professional events and through community engagement.
  • Participate in academic governance and advance the field of civil and environmental engineering through professional service.

Essential Job Functions

  • Develop and deliver undergraduate and graduate courses in civil and environmental engineering in the areas of environmental and sustainability engineering, aligned with the department’s curriculum and learning objectives. Provide effective instruction, mentorship, and academic advising to students. Employ innovative teaching methods and technologies to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes.
  • Establish and lead an independent, externally funded research program in civil and environmental engineering in the areas of environmental and sustainability engineering. Conduct high-impact research, publish scholarly articles in peer-reviewed journals, and present findings at national and international conferences: Collaborate with interdisciplinary research teams and pursue partnerships with industry, government agencies, and academic institutions.
  • Contribute to departmental, university, and professional activities, including committee assignments, curriculum development, accreditation processes, and outreach initiatives. Participate in academic governance, engage in community service, and represent the department at professional conferences and events.

Minimum and Desired Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
  • An earned Ph.D. in civil or environmental engineering or a closely related field with a focus in environmental engineering is required by the time of appointment.
  • Candidates must also hold a bachelor’s degree in an applicable engineering field from an ABET-accredited (or equivalent) program.
  • Demonstrated potential for high-quality teaching and mentoring at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • A strong record of research and publications.
  • Demonstrated potential for interdisciplinary teaching, research, or outreach.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Three years of industry experience and/or prior teaching experience.
  • Experience in teaching core and advanced courses in Environmental Engineering.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or the ability to obtain licensure within three years.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Experience integrating emerging technologies into research and/or instruction.
  • Experience in proposal writing and funded research as principal investigator (PI).
  • Experience in teaching or research in GI Sand/or remote sensing.
  • Expertise in one or more high-impact environmental engineering areas, such as resource recovery and valorization; circular economy and sustainable materials management; characterization and removal or treatment of emerging contaminants; environmental sensing, monitoring, and process control; and geospatial analysis, including GIS, remote sensing, and environmental informatics.

Supplemental Information

Key Competencies:
  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in environmental engineering and GIS (introduction to environmental engineering, water treatment, waste treatment, air pollution, fluid mechanics, environmental processes/chemistry, applications in GIS or remote sensing, and sustainability topics such as green buildings, life cycle assessment, nature-based solutions, or hazard resilience).
  • Develop and sustain a nationally recognized, externally funded research program.
Physical Requirements:
  • Able to lift 25 lbs. and be able to perform a variety of physical tasks, including lifting, bending, stooping, squatting, stair climbing, and walking between buildings.
Job Conditions:
  • This is a 9-month, tenure-track faculty appointment requiring regular on-campus presence to fulfill teaching, research, advising, and service responsibilities.
  • Work is performed in the classroom, laboratory, office, and occasional field settings, including supervision of student research in compliance with university safety standards.
  • The position requires active engagement in externally funded research, including proposal development and grant management, and may involve occasional evening, weekend, or travel commitments related to instructional, research, or professional service activities.
