Overview
Family House is seeking an Assistant Program Director to support the Program Director / Team Leader in overseeing shelter operations, supervising staff, and ensuring a welcoming, safe, trauma-informed, youth-centered environment for teens 12-17 years old. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a genuine, visible care for the population we serve, including their families and community partners, always striving to build positive trusting relationships and support meaningful connections that promote healing and growth.
Job Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in social work, human services, communications, or related field, or 5+ years’ experience working with RHY youth / multi-stressed families.
- Relevant supervisory experience and familiarity with programs serving at-risk RHY youth are preferred.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in diverse settings.
- State Central Registry and NYS Justice Center clearance, valid driver’s license, and reliable transportation required. Bilingual a plus.
Responsibilities:
- Support daily shelter operations, ensuring policies, procedures, and high standards of care are followed.
- Supervise front-line staff and provide guidance, coaching, and performance feedback. Serve as lead in the Director’s absence.
- The APD must be able to respond swiftly and appropriately to youth crisis, guide staff through decision-making, and ensure all actions align with agency policies and trauma-informed approaches.
- Assist with recruitment, onboarding, and staff development.
- Provide on-call support and maintain a flexible schedule including some evenings and/or weekends when needed.
- Contribute to reports, audits, and special projects.
- Demonstrated ability to follow established protocols, maintain accurate documentation, and consistently follow up on tasks and concerns is essential. The ideal candidate will show strong attention to detail and a commitment to ensuring clear communication and accountability at every step, prioritizing the well-being and positive outcomes of youth, families, staff, and community partners.
- The candidate must be open to receiving constructive feedback, adaptable in a dynamic environment, and willing to learn. A teachable mindset and commitment to ongoing training and professional development are essential to ensure continued growth, alignment with best practices, and effective support of youth and staff.
- The ideal candidate will demonstrate personal stability, sound judgment, and the ability to remain calm and grounded in challenging situations. They should bring a consistent, reliable presence to the program, supporting youth and staff without being adversely affected by crisis dynamics.
All staff are expected to participate in planning activities for the development of the program. All employees are also expected to extend significant effort to at least one agency or program fundraising activity per year.
Due to the 24-hour nature of the Family's programs and the agency, Family House will remain open whenever possible, even in adverse conditions. The Program Director and staff are encouraged to use their own good judgment in determining whether it is safe for them to come to work in such conditions. Except when roads are closed by local or state authorities, all staff is encouraged to make any and all attempts to come in to work or have their shifts covered. The immediate supervisor is expected to be made aware of all staff requests for time off or advances in holiday or vacation due to inclement weather and give approval where necessary.
