Assistant Prosecuting Attorney - Civil Division

Position Summary

The Clinton County Prosecutor's Office is accepting applications for the position of Assistant Prosecuting Attorney in the Civil Division. This position provides civil representation and legal counsel to Clinton County boards, elected officials, and agencies as assigned by the Prosecuting Attorney and authorized by Ohio law (including R.C. 309.09).

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal advice and counsel to Clinton County boards, elected officials, and agencies regarding statutory compliance, governance, and day-to-day operations, consistent with R.C. 309.09 and related provisions.
  • Represent Clinton County and/or county officials and agencies in civil litigation and administrative proceedings as assigned; prepare pleadings, motions, briefs, discovery, and related filings; appear for hearings and conferences.
  • Draft, review, and advise on contracts, resolutions, correspondence, policies, and other legal documents.
  • Advise on public records compliance and related litigation matters under R.C. 149.43, including coordination with county offices on responses, retention issues, and litigation-hold practices.
  • Advise on open meetings compliance under R.C. 121.22, including review of agendas, minutes, and executive session requirements.
  • Coordinate with outside counsel when conflicts or specialized litigation assignments require separate counsel; assist with management of cases assigned to outside counsel.
  • Conduct legal research and analysis; provide written and practical recommendations to clients.
  • Maintain organized files and accurate matter-management records; meet deadlines and court schedules.
  • Collaborate with other divisions within the office; assist other divisions as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Prosecuting Attorney and those prescribed by law.

Qualifications

  • Admission to the Ohio Bar pursuant to R.C. 4705.01 and in good standing.
  • Ability to work in the office on a daily basis and to work outside normal business hours when required by hearings, deadlines, or emergencies.
  • Strong legal research and writing skills; ability to produce clear, practical legal advice and persuasive filings under deadline.
  • Professional judgment and discretion; ability to handle privileged and confidential information.
  • Ability to manage multiple client matters simultaneously and communicate effectively with county officials, department leadership, and staff.
  • Familiarity with civil procedure and litigation practice is helpful; prior government practice and/or civil litigation experience is preferred but not required.
  • Proficiency with common office software and legal research platforms (e.g., Westlaw).

Salary and Benefits

  • Salary is commensurate with experience. Starting salary range: $75,000 - $95,000.
  • Full-time role; paid bi-weekly; paid vacation and sick time; 13 paid holidays.
