OVERVIEW:
The Mercer County Prosecutor's Office is seeking qualified attorneys admitted to practice law in the State of New Jersey to serve as Assistant Prosecutors. Under the direction of supervisory staff, Assistant Prosecutors represent the State of New Jersey in criminal matters from investigation through trial, ensuring the fair, ethical, and effective administration of justice.
Assistant Prosecutors perform a wide range of professional legal duties, including case evaluation, legal research, courtroom advocacy, and collaboration with law enforcement, victims, and community partners. This position plays a critical role in advancing public safety and upholding the integrity of the criminal justice system.
All applicants are subject to pre-employment testing, including drug screening, physical examination, and comprehensive criminal background investigation. Eligible employees may qualify for federal student loan forgiveness under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Program and/or the John R. Justice Student Loan Repayment Grant Program.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Reviews
police reports, evidence, and witness statements to determine appropriate
criminal charges.
Prepares
cases for trial, including evaluating evidence and formulating prosecution
strategies.
Conducts
legal research and drafts motions, briefs, indictments, search warrants, and
other legal documents.
Represents
the State in court proceedings, including arraignments, status conferences,
motion hearings, grand jury proceedings, trials, and plea negotiations.
Directs
and assists law enforcement investigations, including determining the scope and
direction of investigations and charges to be presented to the Grand Jury.
Manages an
assigned caseload while maintaining accurate and complete case files and
documentation.
Communicates
with crime victims and witnesses in coordination with the Victim/Witness Unit
to ensure their needs are addressed throughout the legal process.
Advises,
supervises, and collaborates with law enforcement agencies and investigators.
Participates
in police training and community outreach initiatives, as appropriate.
Performs
other related duties as required to support the mission of the Mercer County
Prosecutor's Office.
REQUIREMENTS:
Juris
Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
Admission
to the New Jersey Bar in good standing.
Demonstrated
commitment to public service, ethical prosecution, and public safety.
Successful
completion of a thorough background investigation, including review of
criminal, civil, and financial matters.
Appointees
must possess a valid New Jersey driver's license if operation of a motor
vehicle is required to perform essential job functions.

knowledge of criminal law, criminal procedure, and rules of evidence.
Ability to
analyze complex legal issues and exercise sound professional judgment.
Strong
oral and written communication skills to effectively present cases and interact
with diverse populations.
Ability to
manage a high-volume caseload in a fast-paced, results-driven environment.
Ability to
work collaboratively with law enforcement, victims, witnesses, and internal
teams.
Strong
organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to
maintain confidentiality and uphold ethical standards.
Opportunities
exist for specialization in areas such as Major Crimes, Special Victims,
Special Investigations, and Juvenile Prosecution.
