Summary
The primary purpose of this position is to assist the Security Manager and MPHA’s Security Program to maintain a safe and secure environment in preserving MPHA’s $600,000,000 value of assets for the benefit of MPHA residents and the City of Minneapolis. The Assistant Security Manager will assist in the implementation of MPHA policies and procedures, and in managing day-to-day operations to contribute to the overall success of security and safety activities. Assists with crime investigations, lease violations, safety hazards and other incidents that have occurred on MPHA properties. Works closely with local and federal law enforcement and assists with providing ongoing security training to all employees, residents, and other program staff members. Manages Security Department when Security Manager is unavailable. Must have ability to work variable and/or rotating shifts, which include nights, weekends, and holidays.

Work Environment

Combination of office environment and Authority properties. This position will be subjected to periodically handling potentially dangerous or contentious crisis situations with volatile MPHA residents and/or the public. The noise level in the office environment is usually moderate. Work on Authority properties may cause the employee to experience a range in temperatures and other weather conditions. The noise level may be loud, and the environment may be more hazardous than a standard office environment, including exposure to smells, dust, pests (bed bugs, cockroaches, mice), mold, clutter, deceased persons, bodily fluids, post fires, cigarettes, illegal drugs, criminal activity, sewage, and floods. This position may be required to work with contractors as well as Authority residents.
Education and/or Experience
Bachelor’s degree in law enforcement, business administration or related field and a minimum of 1 year of experience with security management. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Must be able to obtain a Security License/Use of Force certification in the state of Minnesota and become CPR & AED Certified within six months of hire.
Working knowledge of state and federal criminal justice statutes and law enforcement procedures preferred. Law Enforcement Skills training preferred.
Must possess demonstrated leadership, supervisory, teamwork and mentoring skills. Ability to calmly respond to multiple critical events and critical situations making sound decisions, directing, and coordinating staff, and effectively utilizing people and resources during crisis situations; Must demonstrate ability to foster and develop cooperative relationships with local law enforcement.
Must possess ability to enforce policy and procedure with empathy and compassion for the vulnerable population served. Must possess knowledge of how stressors and security concerns impact residents, as well as be able to problem solve, manage, and resolve conflicts and de-escalate dangerous situations.
Must have project management experience with ability to organize and prioritize multiple deadlines, and multiple projects of various sizes.
This position requires the possession of a valid MN driver’s license and requires use of a personal vehicle and evidence of individual automobile insurance coverage, or the ability to be insurable under the Authority’s automobile insurance plan at the standard rate. Must pass a criminal history background check.
Technical Skills
To perform this job successfully, the employee should have strong computer skills, including MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and possess camera and security system knowledge. Must have the ability to learn other computer software programs as required by assigned tasks.
Demonstrated understanding of Security and Safety technology for high-rise building maintenance and systems.

To perform this job successfully, the employee will have periods of frequent and sustained walking and extensive use of hands and arms. Daily movements include sitting; standing; reaching and grasping; stooping/squatting, operating computers, and other office equipment; moving about the office and out in the field; and attending onsite and offsite meetings. The employee must be able to exchange information in person, in writing, and via telephone. The employee must occasionally transport up to 50 pounds and be able to wear uniform requirements/gear with weight up to 20 lbs.
