Assistant Starbucks Manager

Duties and Responsibilities Guest Experience & Brand Standards
  • Create a welcoming environment; greet guests promptly and manage queues during peak times.
  • Ensure beverages and food items meet recipe, temperature, and presentation standards every time.
  • Resolve guest issues quickly and professionally; provide make‑goods/refunds within guidelines.
  • Promote featured beverages and seasonal offerings; coach suggestive selling to lift average ticket.
Bar Operations & Quality
  • Set up stations for opening, including calibration checks, milk and non‑dairy prep, pastry case set, and smallwares.
  • Oversee beverage production flow to maintain speed of service and drink accuracy.
  • Monitor cleanliness and maintenance of espresso machines, grinders, brewers, blenders, and refrigeration.
  • Enforce food safety practices: thermometer use, milk shelf‑life, handwashing, allergen controls, and hold times.
  • Maintain accurate labeling and date marking for all prep and ready‑to‑eat items.
People Leadership
  • Lead by example on bar; coach baristas on beverage builds, sequencing, and customer engagement.
  • Assist with interviewing, onboarding, and ongoing training; maintain skill checklists and certifications.
  • Assign positions (order taker, bar, support, handoff, register) and rotate to balance workload and develop skills.
  • Provide real‑time feedback and recognition; support performance conversations as needed.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and safety‑first culture.
Inventory, Ordering & COGS
  • Track milk, syrup, coffee, tea, pastry, and packaging usage to maintain optimal par levels.
  • Place and receive orders; verify counts, rotate stock (FIFO), and minimize waste/spoilage.
  • Audit high‑cost and limited items (e.g., seasonal syrups, RTD beverages) to prevent shrink.
  • Prepare daily waste logs and recommend menu/production adjustments to reduce write‑offs.
Scheduling, Productivity & KPIs
  • Help build weekly schedules aligned to traffic patterns and promotions.
  • Monitor key metrics: transactions per labor hour, average ticket, on‑time handoff, and customer satisfaction.
  • Conduct spot checks on recipe compliance and station setup to drive consistency.
  • Complete opening/closing checklists and daily cleaning assignments.
Cash Handling & Compliance
  • Ensure accurate cash management at registers and tips procedures; perform safe counts and till audits.
  • Uphold company policies for coupon/discount use, age‑restricted items (if applicable), and void/refund controls.
  • Safeguard sensitive areas (back room, milk walk‑in, syrup storage) and report discrepancies immediately.
Safety, Sanitation & Maintenance
  • Enforce PPE and safe‑handling practices for hot liquids, sharps, and chemical usage.
  • Maintain sanitation standards for equipment, drains, floors, and food‑contact surfaces; complete required logs.
  • Report equipment issues promptly and coordinate service requests; maintain loaner plans when needed.
  • Support emergency procedures for power outages, water issues, or equipment failures.
Communication & Administration
  • Lead pre‑shift huddles covering promos, samples, and station priorities.
  • Maintain up‑to‑date SOPs, recipe cards, and quick‑reference guides at the bar.
  • Submit daily recap (sales, labor, incidents, waste, out‑of‑stocks) to Starbucks Manager and Store leadership.
  • Partner with Front End and other departments for product tie‑ins (bakery, seasonal, and holiday events).
Other Duties
  • Act as the Starbucks Manager when needed to ensure continuity of operations.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned by store or department leadership.
Skills and Qualifications
  • Strong customer‑service orientation with confident, clear communication.
  • Hands‑on knowledge of espresso‑based beverages, brewing methods, and café workflow.
  • Proven ability to lead a team in a fast‑paced environment and coach to standard.
  • Organized and detail‑oriented; comfortable with checklists, temperatures, and prep logs.
  • Basic math skills for recipes, yields, and cash handling.
  • Proficient with POS and handheld/ordering devices; able to learn new systems quickly.
  • Flexible schedule availability, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Physical Requirements
  • Stand and move continuously for 6–8 hour shifts.
  • Frequently lift and carry 25–40 lbs (milk crates, coffee, ice, and supplies).
  • Regular bending, reaching, twisting; safe handling of hot equipment and cleaning chemicals.
  • Work in warm/humid conditions near steam wands and ovens, and in cold storage as needed.
Work Environment
  • Fast‑paced, guest‑facing coffee bar within a retail grocery store.
  • Mix of front‑of‑house service, back‑of‑house prep, and refrigerated storage areas.
  • Peak‑time intensity requiring strong coordination and communication.

Pay Transparency:



Starting rates will be no less than the local minimum wage and may vary based on things like location, experience, qualifications, and the terms of any applicable collective bargaining agreement. Candidates with unique qualifications may be considered for compensation above this range. Dependent on length of service, hours worked, any applicable collective bargaining agreement and/or Company policy, benefits may include medical, dental, vision, disability and life insurance, sick pay*, PTO/Vacation pay*, paid holidays*, bereavement pay and retirement benefits (pension and/or 401(k) eligibility). Associates in this position may be eligible for a quarterly bonus, subject to Company bonus plans. Applications are accepted on an on-going basis.


  • For roles in Washington State: Sick pay and PTO/Vacation pay are accrued based on hours worked and paid holidays are issued at 7-9 days annually.
