Assistant Superintendent

Summary/Objective


The Assistant Superintendent’s primary responsibility is to support the Superintendent and Project Manager in the successful completion of assigned projects. The Assistant Superintendent participates in overseeing job site safety, quality, project scheduling, and communications with the architect and consultants on field and constructability issues. This position requires regular travel to project sites.


Primary Job Responsibilities

  • Assist Superintendent with managing job site safety, quality, and schedule for assigned projects from pre-construction to closeout.
  • Ensure NDCs standards of quality and safety are adhered to by assertively championing NDC’s safety culture to project team and subcontractors.
  • Work collaboratively with Project Superintendent, Project Manager, project team members, Design Consultants, and Owner.
  • Represent NDC in a professional manner.
  • Travel time example: you could be assigned to a project in Kittery, Maine for say 4 months, then the next project could be in Beaufort, SC for say 6 months (or what the project duration is). NDC compensates for the hotel or Airbnb and per diem at the location’s prevailing rate for food (travel days are compensated at 75% of the rate to/from and 100% while on site). Trips back home are worked in from the best business perspective and do not interfere with project requirements.

Other Responsibilities

  • Assist in managing the field and project team successfully and collaboratively.
  • Establish and maintain positive and effective relationships and communication with client, Construction Manager, project team, consultants/architect/engineers, subcontractors, adjacent community, trade unions, governmental agencies.
  • Assist with setting up job site logistics, field coordination, and project schedule.
  • Participate in the review of all project documents for constructability and content, including shop drawings.
  • Maintain and update project records including RFI’s, ASI’s and as-builts.
  • Assist with creating and enforcing a site-specific emergency action plan for assigned projects in collaboration with the Project Manager or Superintendent.
  • Coordinate subcontractors.
  • Coordinate with building inspections, subcontractor inspections, and agencies.
  • In collaboration with the Superintendent perform daily job site walks and submit daily safety audit reports, daily production and manpower reports.
  • Conduct and/or attend Forman meetings, pre-task meetings, safety meetings and project staff meetings.
  • Assist with the management of job site manpower production and performance.
  • Use project management and scheduling software effectively.
  • As required, attend company and industry events including meetings, training, workshops, etc.
  • Other related duties as assigned or needed.

Competencies, Skills, Abilities, Qualifications

  • Familiarity with construction standards, safety regulations, and government contract compliance.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
  • Proficiency in using a personal computer (PC), company communication tools such as email / internet, Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and quality control software is a requirement. Proficiency in RMS, ECMS, and Procore is a plus.
  • Ability to work independently and travel frequently.
  • Certifications such as OSHA 30, ACI, or USACE CQM (or willingness to obtain) are required.
  • Valid driver’s license and the ability to travel as required.

Supervisory Responsibility

Depending on the project, may have direct reports but likely not.


Work Environment


  • Outdoor Environment: Most work will be conducted outdoors, exposed to the elements. This includes working in hot, cold, rainy, or windy conditions. Appropriate clothing and safety gear will be provided to help mitigate environmental risks.

While performing the duties of this job the employee may be exposed to conditions that include

weather such as heat and/or humidity and cold, fumes or airborne particles, exposure to dust and

asphalt and moving mechanical parts. There may be occasional exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals. Conditions can also include the risk of electrical shock and risk of vibration. The noise level in the work environment can often be loud.


This position is regularly required to:

  • Walk, climb stairs, sit, and stand.
  • Talk and hear at normal levels.
  • See with close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and have
the ability to adjust focus.
  • Reach with hands and arms.
  • Use hands and fingers to operate tools and other business machines.
  • Lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.

Expected Hours of Work


Construction projects often follow strict timelines. As a result, you may be required to work after hours, including evenings and weekends, to meet project deadlines.


Travel


Depending on the project, employees may be required to travel to different job sites, which could be located in urban, rural, or industrial areas. Some projects may involve overnight stays or travel for remote locations.


Required Education and Experience


  • High school diploma or equivalent; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field is preferred.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in construction, quality control, or a related field.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

Must be able to get a background check and drug test.


Work Authorization

Must be eligible to work in the United States.(Some positions, based on contract stipulations may require U.S. citizenship)
