Position Overview
The Glen Cove Child Day Care Center is seeking a dependable and motivated Assistant Cook to support daily food preparation and kitchen operations for our preschool and Head Start program. This position plays an essential role in providing nutritious meals to young children in a safe, clean, and fast-paced kitchen environment.
The ideal candidate is reliable, organized, patient, and able to work efficiently under pressure while maintaining food safety standards. Because our kitchen operates with a small team, strong teamwork and accountability are essential.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with preparation and cooking of large-batch meals and snacks for children
- Support daily meal service following food safety and sanitation standards
- Help with food prep, portioning, and kitchen organization
- Maintain cleanliness of kitchen, equipment, and food storage areas
- Follow meal schedules and preparation timelines
- Assist with receiving and storing food deliveries
- Work collaboratively with kitchen staff to ensure smooth daily operations
- Maintain a positive and professional attitude in a fast-paced environment
- Follow all health department, CACFP, and program nutrition guidelines
Required Qualifications
- Physically able to lift 30–50 lbs
- Able to stand for 4–6 hours at a time
- Strong time management and multitasking skills
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment
- Good reading and writing skills
- Food safety knowledge and safe food handling practices
- Critical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Dependable and punctual with strong work ethic
- Positive attitude and willingness to work as part of a team
- Comfortable working in a preschool environment and interacting respectfully with children
Preferred Qualifications
- 3–4 months experience in a commercial kitchen (preferred)
- Experience with large-batch food preparation and cooking
- Previous school, childcare, or institutional kitchen experience
- Food Handler or ServSafe certification (or willingness to obtain)

- Fast-paced preschool kitchen serving young children daily

Pay: $18.00 - $19.00 per hour
