Position Summary
The Associate Director of Transportation Operations is a key leadership role responsible for overseeing day-to-day transportation operations while being intentionally developed to assume a future Director of Operations position. This role partners closely with Directors of Operations, leadership, and route drivers to ensure safe, efficient, and cost-effective delivery, routing, scheduling, inventory movement, and team performance across all transportation functions.
This position is both hands-on and strategic, requiring deep operational understanding today and the ability to think, plan, and lead at a director level tomorrow.

Key Responsibilities
· Operational Leadership
· Support and help lead all transportation operations including routing, scheduling, delivery execution, inventory movement, and fleet utilization.
· Serve as a visible leader in the field, regularly engaging with drivers, leadership, and support staff.
· Ensure consistent execution of operational standards, policies, and safety procedures.
· Manage daily operations in the absence of a Director of Operations.
Team Leadership & Development
· Directly support and mentor route drivers to improve performance, accountability, and leadership capability.
· Help identify training needs and participate in developing team members for advancement.
· Model strong leadership behaviors, communication, and decision-making.
· Assist in performance management, coaching, and corrective action when necessary.
Routing, Scheduling & Efficiency
· Assist with route planning, optimization, and adjustments to improve efficiency and service levels.
· Analyze route performance, labor utilization, and delivery metrics to identify improvement opportunities.
· Partner with leadership on seasonal planning, growth initiatives, and territory changes.
Inventory & Asset Management
· Gain full understanding of inventory flow tied to transportation activities.
· Ensure proper handling, transfer, and accountability of product during transportation.
· Support fleet management efforts including vehicle readiness, maintenance coordination, and compliance.
Safety, Compliance & Risk Management
· Enforce company and customer safety standards.
· Participate in safety training, audits, and incident investigations.
· Promote a culture of safety-first decision making.
Continuous Improvement & Strategy
· Participate in process improvement initiatives across transportation and operations.
· Learn and apply director-level thinking including KPI tracking and cross-department collaboration.
· Provide recommendations to leadership based on operational data and field insights.
Development Focus
This role is intentionally designed to prepare the Associate Director for a future Director of Operations position through exposure to all aspects of transportation operations and strategic leadership.
Qualifications
· 5+ years of experience in transportation, logistics, or operations leadership.
· Proven experience leading frontline teams.
· Strong understanding of routing, scheduling, and delivery operations.
· Proven analytical skillset.
· Demonstrated ability to coach and develop teams.
· Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
