Associate Municipal Court Judge

The City of Harlingen has one contract position for:

a. Associate Municipal Court Judge

Duties will include, but are not limited to, presiding over Class “C” Misdemeanor court hearings, city ordinances court hearings, bench and jury trials, examining trials, juvenile hearings and motions to reduced or modify bond hearings. Duties will also include presiding over Magistrate Court hearings involving both misdemeanor and felony arrests.

This position will require the Associate Municipal Court Judge to work weekends, holidays, and as needed. The Associate Judge will also be responsible for receiving and responding to DWI blood warrant phone calls after 7 p.m.. Successful applicants will also need to be able to fill in for the Presiding Municipal Court Judge, if absent, during the week. Compensation will be based on the preset compensation schedule for assigned tasks.

EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION AND TRAINING QUALIFICATIONS:

• Valid Texas Driver's License.

• Be a resident of the State of Texas and Cameron County.

• Must be a licensed attorney in good standing with the State Bar of Texas.

• five (5) years of experience as a practicing attorney. Experience as a judge, prosecutor or criminal defense counsel preferred.

• Bi-lingual (Spanish) ability.

• Familiarity with the rules of evidence, courtroom procedures, and the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure

• The Associate Judge will attend such continuing education as is required by the Rules of Judicial Education.
