Position Summary:

The Associate Research Scientist I supports the design and execution of microbial research initiatives within the Microbial Innovation Center in Oak Creek, Wisconsin. In this role, you will contribute to the development of innovative biosolutions for animal agriculture, human health, and environmental sustainability by generating high-quality proof-of-concept data.


Leveraging expertise in microbiology and molecular biology, the Associate Research Scientist I works on diverse in vitro research projects, collaborates with cross-functional R&D and business teams, and helps advance early-stage microbial technologies. This position combines hands-on laboratory research with data analysis and scientific communication in a fast-paced, innovation-focused environment, advancing the organization’s mission to Feed, Clean and Save the World.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and execute in vitro research studies to evaluate probiotic and bioactive microbial technologies for livestock, human health, and environmental applications.
  • Develop, validate, and implement microbial models and experimental methods to generate efficacy and mechanistic data that inform product development decisions.
  • Collaborate with scientists and cross-functional stakeholders to interpret data and advance projects through early-stage innovation pipelines.
  • Support the development and execution of project proposals, timelines, and deliverables in alignment with program objectives.
  • Analyze experimental data using appropriate statistical and analytical approaches; summarize results and contribute to data-driven recommendations.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate technical documentation, including laboratory notebooks, SOPs, and research reports.
  • Communicate research findings through technical reports, presentations, publications, and patent-related documentation, as appropriate.
  • Teach, coach, and learn from team members by contributing to a collaborative laboratory environment and shared scientific standards.
  • Stay current with scientific literature and emerging trends in microbiome science, molecular biology, and microbial engineering.
  • Represent the organization at scientific conferences and industry events, as appropriate.

Typical Work Environment:

  • Work is performed in office and laboratory settings, with frequent movement between bench work, meetings, and data analysis.Work involves handling biological materials and chemicals in compliance with biosafety procedures and PPE requirements.
  • Occasional U.S. and international travel may be required (<10%).

Minimum Qualifications:

Education & Training:

  • PhD or Master’s degree in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, or related field (required).

Relevant Experience:

  • 2-5 years of professional experience in microbial research, microbiome technologies, or microbial engineering.

Technical Skills:

  • Working knowledge of microbial techniques, including in vitro screening, microbial diagnostics, model development, and molecular methods such as qPCR, gene expression analysis, and next-generation sequencing.
  • Expertise in microbial strain engineering and CRISPR/Cas technology (preferred).
  • Familiarity with bioinformatics tools and biological data analysis approaches.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience with R, Python, QIIME2, LIMS, or similar platforms preferred.
  • Strong scientific writing, data interpretation, and presentation skills.
  • Experience handling environmental and BSL-2 pathogen samples in a laboratory setting.
  • Knowledge of design of experiments principles and statistical analysis techniques.

Licenses/Certifications:

  • None required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform laboratory work for extended periods and lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Manual dexterity to operate laboratory equipment safely while using PPE.

Safety Requirements:

  • Adherence to all company safety policies, biosafety procedures, chemical hygiene standards, and FDA food safety regulations, including FSMA.
  • Consistent use of appropriate PPE and prompt reporting of safety concerns.
  • Adherence to all food safety procedures as per FDA regulations, including the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) or any other applicable federal, state, or local food safety regulations.
