Universities Space Research Association (USRA) is seeking a full-time Associate Scientist to join its team in Washington, DC. The successful candidate will support atmospheric research related to aerosols conducted by the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL). The role involves conducting basic and applied research in areas including, but not limited to, coupled atmospheric-ocean sciences, optimization, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning (ML). Responsibilities include maintaining a modeling system for aerosol prediction, which encompasses code development/implementation, data analysis, and model evaluation/validation.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain the Navy Atmospheric Aerosol Prediction System (NAAPS) global aerosol prediction system.
  • Perform and maintain code development and implementation.
  • Analyze, evaluate, and validate model outputs using observational data.
  • Coordinate data exchange with government laboratories and university collaborators.
  • Provide forecasting support and instrumentation maintenance in field experiments/operations.
  • Work with multiple collaborators and monitor work to ensure compliance with the client’s specifications and guidelines.
  • Support software and database transition to customers, including the configuration management, development of manuals, documentation, training materials, and technical support for operations, testing, and evaluations.
  • Remain open to training in additional analytical, numerical, simulation, and analysis skills.

Work will be carried out under the technical guidance and supervision of the NRL supervisors.

Required Qualifications:

Education: The successful candidate should hold a master's degree in Atmospheric Science, Environmental Science, or a related field.

Experience:

  • Strong background in atmospheric science, with a particular focus on aerosols and related analysis methods.
  • Experience in developing and/or maintaining large atmospheric modeling systems.
  • Proficiency in performing data analysis using atmospheric, meteorological, and other relevant models and observational datasets.
  • Strong technical writing skills for documentation and reporting.
  • Desired experience in programming languages such as FORTRAN, Python, and SQL.
  • Ability to document and present research activities and the outcomes through presentations, reports, and peer-reviewed publications.

  • Have a willingness to learn and collaborate with other scientists/researchers and clients.
  • Possess strong verbal and written communication skills.

Working Conditions:

This role routinely utilizes standard office equipment, including computers, phones, and photocopiers. Extensive online usage. This is largely a sedentary role. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform their essential duties and responsibilities.
