The Invertebrates team at the Stowers Institute for Medical Research is seeking a skilled and experienced Associate Scientist to plan, organize, and oversee the care and maintenance of the aphid facility and host plants, ensuring proper scheduling, inventory, chargebacks, and compliance with relevant standards. This role will serve as the primary point of contact for aphid and plant husbandry, provide training and coverage coordination for staff and researchers, and facilitate efficient workflows and cross-training within the department. This Associate Scientist II position will report to the Director of Research Organisms.

Duties

  • Provide advanced care and husbandry of invertebrates, including the maintenance of aphid cultures and associated host plants.

  • Contribute to facility and life support system design, development, and optimization.

  • Develop and implement SOPs and protocols.

  • Train staff and researchers on husbandry techniques, technical procedures, and compliance requirements.

  • Assist with coordinating scheduling, task assignments, chargebacks, and holiday coverage to support continuous operations and ensure smooth department functioning.

  • Manage inventory, supplies, and equipment maintenance; preparing for EH&S and IACUC inspections.

  • Contribute to research and development projects.

  • Serve as a liaison with researchers, schedule project meetings, and facilitate effective communication.

  • Conduct orientations, training, and tours for researchers, visiting scientists, and stakeholders.

  • Assist with the development and setup of new model organisms and facilities.

Education

A bachelor’s degree in life sciences or a related discipline is preferred.

Minimum Experience

  • Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills with the ability to train and mentor staff.

  • Proficiency with standard computer programs, including Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word.

  • Self-motivation and the ability to work collaboratively within a team environment.

  • Ability to work weekends and holidays as required.
