Assistant Attorney General – Health and Education

The Tennessee Attorney General and Reporter represents all State officials, employees, agencies, departments, boards, and commissions in matters arising from their public duties. Such representation includes litigation, transactional assistance, and general legal advice to a wide variety of State entities. The Attorney General’s Office employs approximately 200 attorneys organized into 21 legal divisions within 6 sections.

About the Health and Education Division:

The Health and Education Division (HED) is part of the State Services and Litigation Section of the Attorney General’s Office. HED represents and advises the State’s education entities (Department of Education, Board of Education, state universities) and oversees programmatic litigation for TennCare and the Department of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.

HED’s practice areas give attorneys exciting opportunities to work on complex, high-profile cases with novel and significant issues. This division strives to offer the best culture for litigators in public service: excellent work-product on interesting issues in a collegial and collaborative environment, while also protecting a high-quality of life outside of work.

Job Overview:

The duties and responsibilities of HED AAG include, but are not limited to, the following:

· Developing case strategy with the client agency;

· Collaborating with other attorneys, paralegals, and support staff within the office;

· Obtaining, providing, and evaluating oral, written, and electronic discovery;

· Consulting with expert witnesses;

· Pursuing effective motion practice;

· Negotiating and mediating settlements or trying cases; and

· Protecting the State’s interests on appeal.

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:

· Four or more years of complex civil litigation experience preferred;

· Demonstrated excellence in legal research and writing, preferably in the areas of constitutional, election, and education law;

· Strong analytical, negotiating, and oral advocacy skills; and

· Electronic discovery experience preferred.

Pay: $100,000.00 - $170,000.00 per year
