ERIE CATHOLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM (ECSS)

JOB TITLE: ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

REPORTS TO: PRESIDENT OF ECSS

POSITION STATUS: FULL TIME, EXEMPT

Position Summary:

The Athletic Director is responsible for overseeing the ECSS athletic program and developing an education-based athletic program that is an extension of the regular classroom. The Athletic Director will work closely with the ECSS administration, the Athletic Supervisor at each campus, the coaches, the parents, and the student-athletes. Additionally, the Athletic Director will collaborate closely with the Vice President of Communications, Marketing, and Enrollment regarding athletics marketing management and promotion.

Key Responsibilities

  • Program Leadership: Problem solve using strong ethical, objective, analytical, and decision-making skills.
  • Program Management: Oversee the planning, organization, and execution of all athletic programs. Ensure that all programs align with the mission of ECSS and our Catholic identity. Establish an ECSS athletics handbook in conjunction with the Athletic Supervisors.
  • Campus Collaboration: Establish a four-to-six-week schedule of meetings with the Athletic Supervisors of each of the five campuses. At least 75% of the meetings must be held in person. Work with the Athletic Supervisors to ensure equitable athletic program opportunities are available across the System.
  • Personnel Supervision: Recruit, train, and evaluate coaches. Along with the Athletic Supervisors recruit and train volunteers and any other individuals associated with ECSS athletics. Provide relevant professional development opportunities for all personnel.
  • Event Coordination: Schedule and coordinate all athletic events, including games, practices, tournaments, and other related activities. Ensure proper facilities, officials, equipment, and transportation are available.
  • Compliance: Ensure all athletic programs comply with relevant rules and regulations. Maintain accurate records of student eligibility, physicals, and other required documentation, as well as clearances of all coaches and volunteers.
  • Student-Athlete Support: Foster a positive and inclusive environment for student-athletes. Promote academic achievement, sportsmanship, and personal development.
  • Safety and Risk Management: Ensure all activities are conducted safely. Develop and implement policies to minimize risk and respond to emergencies. Oversee the improvement of athletic facilities, ensuring they meet the needs of the programs and adhere to safety standards.
  • Assessment of Athletic Programs: Working with the Vice Presidents of Academic Affairs and Communication, Marketing, and Enrollment, develop an assessment tool to evaluate each athletic program and prepare quarterly reports for distribution to the ECSS administration, ECSS Board of Directors, Parents, and the Community.
  • Athletics Marketing Leadership: Lead athletics marketing efforts in collaboration with and under the supervision of the Vice President of Communications, Marketing, and Enrollment, ensuring alignment with Erie Catholic brand guidelines and standards.

· Content Creation: Serve as the primary content creator for Erie Catholic athletics posts across digital and social platforms while coordinating with school campus athletic directors to collect and share timely content from staff, coaches, and athletes to highlight achievements, events, and community engagement.

· Event Promotion and Engagement: Develop and share promotional content to engage audiences and build excitement around Erie Catholic athletic events.

· General Marketing Support: Will provide general marketing support as directed or needed for the System in collaboration with the Vice President of Communications, Marketing, and Enrollment.

  • Homestay Coordinator: The designation of Homestay Coordinator is forthcoming by July 1, 2026.

Qualifications

  • Education: An associate or bachelor’s degree in physical education, sports management, or a related field required.
  • Experience: Minimum of five years of experience in athletic administration, physical education, coaching, or a related field. Previous experience in a leadership role within an athletic department is highly desirable.

ü Demonstrate adherence to the highest moral standards at all times.

Working Conditions

  • Requires regular attendance at athletic events, including evenings and weekends.
  • Must be able to work in a variety of environments, including gymnasiums, outdoor fields, office settings, and more.
  • Ability to travel is needed.

· All ECO positions require on-campus attendance; remote work and flexible scheduling options are not offered.

Physical Requirements

· Work Environment: The work environment for this position varies and includes both indoor and outdoor athletics settings, as well as an office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment with a vast majority of the time utilizing computers, cell phones, and other electronic devices.

Definitions

Education-based Athletic Program – Participation in school sports programs needs to be an extension of the academic classroom. Students should not only gain opportunities for personal physical activity, personal knowledge of a variety of sports, and personal skill development in one or more sports but also students should

· Learn sportsmanship to win humbly and graciously and to lose with dignity.

· Model integrity through playing by the rules.

· Use teamwork to contribute to a greater goal in which the athlete places the team’s success or recognition before that of an individual.

· Reach out to assist teammates, which translates into helping others around them in life and contributing to the community.

· Develop perseverance and the ability to bounce back from defeats.

· Incorporate goal setting learned through athletics into their approach to academics and life.

· Develop a solid work ethic that emphasizes preparation and effort.

While some of these principles can be learned simply through involvement in athletic programs, others require the intentional focus of coaches, administrators, and other school leaders. Learning the concepts of sportsmanship, playing by the rules, teamwork and perseverance will pay huge dividends throughout these students’ lives.
