DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the direction of the Attorney General or Assistant Attorney General, provides legal services and support to assigned Navajo Nation divisions, departments, and programs, including but not limited to:
- Providing legal guidance and advice on statutory and regulatory authority, contract disputes, procurement matters, and intergovernmental relations
- Performing professional legal work, including legal research, trial preparation, and drafting briefs, pleadings, contracts, and other legal documents
- Conferring with departments and branches of government and preparing legal opinions and interpretations of legislation, regulations, and judicial decisions
- Reviewing contracts, leases, permits, and related documents for legal sufficiency and compliance
- Interviewing witnesses, complainants, and other individuals in connection with legal matters
- Assisting with the routine operations of the Department of Justice
- Performing other related duties as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree
- Current admission to any state bar with the intention of seeking admission to the Navajo Nation Bar Association and either the Arizona, New Mexico, or Utah State Bar within one (1) year of hire
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of federal, state, and tribal laws, including Federal Indian Law
- Knowledge of legal research methods and techniques
- Skill in analyzing, organizing, and applying facts, evidence, and case law
- Ability to prepare clear, well-reasoned legal opinions and arguments
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
