Attorney - Municipal, Education, Zoning & Land Use

Unruh Turner Burke & Frees, a thriving suburban Philadelphia-area law firm based in West Chester, Pennsylvania, with a strong municipal, land development and school law practice, has an opening for a team-oriented attorney (associate, senior associate, or of counsel level) with 5+ years of experience in municipal, land use and zoning law. Education law experience in representing public school clients is a plus. The ideal candidate will have solid interpersonal skills, strong initiative, and an interest in first-chair public meeting and hearing work during evening hours.

Primary Functions and Responsibilities

The position entails representation of public clients including townships, zoning hearing boards, authorities and school districts along with other similar solicitorships; in the private sector work, the position includes representation of developers, business owners and property owners in land use and zoning matters. The candidate will provide sophisticated research, analysis and direct advice to clients. Duties include navigating municipal statutes, regulations and local codes; participating in, and leading municipal meetings and development hearings. Presentation skills and the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously is a must. The ability to attend public meetings and hearings on a regular basis, including evening work, is required.

Relevant Experience and Major Qualifications

• Admitted to practice in Pennsylvania.
• Previous law firm experience in Pennsylvania representing public and / or private clients in local governmental settings, with experience and ability to take leads roles in that context.
• Excellent drafting, research and writing ability, including both trial and appellate brief-writing.
• Strong client communication skills with high levels of motivation. We are looking for a hard-working, detail-oriented self-starter who can manage complex issues and cases.
• Demonstrated ability to absorb, process and understand new information rapidly.
• Ability to work with clients, development interests and public sector representatives with equal composure and professionalism.
• Interest and experience in public school law is an additional plus, as is experience in prosecuting municipal enforcement matters.
