About the Project The South Jersey Lesbian Oral History Project is a community-based initiative dedicated to preserving the life stories of lesbians who came of age in South Jersey and the Greater Philadelphia region during the 1960s–1980s. Through recorded interviews, we will document personal histories that might otherwise be lost and make them available for future generations, scholars, and the broader public.
Position Overview Michelle Ayers and Joan Buehler, SJLOHP co-founders, are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Audio & Video Production Intern who will be responsible for capturing audio and video as we interview lesbians who have agreed to speak about their experiences growing up lesbian in South Jersey. Intern is responsible for all technical aspects of recording while the interview is in progress.The intern will work alongside us to edit each session into final publishable files. This is an excellent opportunity for students interested in media production, documentary work, public history, archives, and LGBTQ+ studies.
Responsibilities
● Advise on needed audio and video equipment
● Set up audio and video equipment and utilize for oral history interviews (including camera, microphones, lighting, and file management)
● Troubleshoot during recording sessions
● Edit audio and video recordings for clarity, continuity, and sound quality
● Sync audio and video files when needed
● Create archival-quality files and shorter edited versions for web or educational use
● Label, organize, and back up digital files according to project guidelines
● Maintain confidentiality and ethical standards required for oral history work
● Prepare clips for publishing and/or archiving Qualifications
● Associates or Bachelor’s degree in Audio/Video Production, or currently enrolled in a degree program with audio/video production coursework
● Familiarity with basic recording equipment (DSLR or mirrorless cameras, smartphones, external microphones, i.e., Vlogging kits)
● Knowledge of proper sound quality, lighting and framing
● Working knowledge of an editing program (Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Audacity, or advise us on preferred program)
● Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
● Ability to handle sensitive personal narratives with professionalism and care
● Interest in oral history and in particular LGBTQ+ history
● Experience recording interviews (preferred)
