About the Role (Overview):
As an AVL Engineer/Designer, you will assist with (and eventually lead) the design, engineering, documentation, and commissioning of theatrical lighting, AV, and control systems. You will work closely with senior engineers, installers, project managers, and clients to deliver complete turnkey systems.
This position includes a mix of office work (design, engineering, estimating, drawings) and on-site work (system testing, commissioning, troubleshooting).
Key Responsibilities:
Engineering & Design:
- Assist in designing theatrical lighting, AV, and control systems.
- Create drawings and documentation using Vectorworks, AutoCAD, or similar software.
- Prepare system line diagrams, layouts, patch sheets, schematics, risers, and cut sheets.
Project Documentation & Technical Workflows
- Develop Bills of Materials (BOMs), product research, and equipment selection.
- Assist with estimating and project budgeting.
- Prepare engineering reports, test documentation, and troubleshooting notes.
Project Coordination
- Support scheduling with installers and clients.
- Communicate with manufacturers, vendors, and internal teams.
- Help manage project timelines, punch lists, and closeout documentation.
Commissioning & Field Work
- Assist with system testing, tuning, and commissioning.
- Diagnose issues related to audio, video, lighting, control, or networking systems.
- Perform site inspections and system verifications.
Desired Skills / Qualifications:
Required:
- Strong willingness to learn theatrical lighting and AV systems.
- Ability to work both independently and within a team.
- Interest in developing skills with ETC systems, Dante, Vectorworks, EASE, AMX, and other industry tools.
- Ability to work in technical, hands-on environments (training provided).
- Problem-solving mindset and ability to research solutions independently.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Technical Theater, or IT/AV-related field (preferred, not required).
- Knowledge of one or more technologies: ETC, Dante, Milan, AMX, Vectorworks, EASE, AutoCAD, networking, rigging, or relevant AV tools.
- Experience with theatrical productions, IT/networking, AV integration, or lighting design is a plus.

Pay: $65,000.00 - $97,760.00 per year
