Automation Integration Engineer II

About the Role

Automation Engineer II is a mid-level role for engineers ready to own their work and lead technical execution within projects. At this level, you’re designing systems, solving problems independently, and serving as a technical resource for both teammates and customers.

You’ll take ownership of moderate projects or defined scopes within larger efforts, while also mentoring junior engineers and contributing to continuous improvement across the organization.

What You’ll Do

  • Design and implement complete control solutions including PLCs, HMIs, and industrial networks
  • Perform electrical design for control panels and ensure compliance with standards
  • Lead system testing and commissioning with minimal supervision
  • Troubleshoot system and field issues efficiently and effectively
  • Integrate PLC systems with SCADA, IT, and third-party equipment
  • Communicate technical status and solutions with project managers and customers
  • Contribute to improving engineering standards, tools, and processes
  • Mentor junior engineers and support their technical development

What We’re Looking For

  • Strong proficiency in PLC and HMI programming (multi-platform experience preferred)
  • Working knowledge of electrical codes, panel design, and industrial networking
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills in real-world environments
  • Clear, professional communication with internal teams and customers
  • Ability to manage technical scope with minimal oversight

Typical Experience: 2–5 years in automation, controls, or systems integration.

Requirements:

Responsibilities:

  • Design, install, and maintain PLC-based electrical control systems per client specifications and industry standards.
  • Create and modify system designs, including electrical layouts and wiring schematics.
  • Program, troubleshoot, and upgrade PLC hardware and software (primarily Allen-Bradley).
  • Supervise installation, testing, and commissioning activities to ensure accuracy and reliability.
  • Collaborate with project teams and mentor junior team members.
  • Travel occasionally to the CLX headquarters or domestic airport project sites.
  • Work in demanding physical environments—navigating ladders, confined spaces, low lighting, temperature variations, and obstacles as needed.

Requirements:

  • Strong engineering foundation with proven abilities in critical thinking, decision-making, documentation, and problem-solving.
  • Willingness to travel with short notice.
  • 5+ years of automation experience, specifically with Allen-Bradley PLC programming.
  • Experience supervising or leading controls engineers and/or vendors.
  • Ability to remain stationary for up to 50% of the workday and navigate airport or industrial environments for extended periods.
  • Strong written, verbal, and phone communication skills; high attention to detail; strong follow-through and ownership.
  • Experience with airport baggage handling systems (BHS).
  • BSEE, E.T., or a related technical degree.
  • AutoCAD experience, especially electrical drafting.
  • Scheduling and estimating experience.
