Job Title: Automation Operations Specialist

Location: Detroit, MI

Company: Manufacturing Automation Group LLC (MAG)

Job Type: Full-Time

About Us

Manufacturing Automation Group (MAG) is an industrial automation and systems integration company focused on advancing American manufacturing through innovation. Founded in 2024, MAG partners with leading manufacturers to design, implement, and optimize intelligent intralogistics systems, including Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs), Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs), and other connected automation technologies.

Our mission is simple: to power the future of American manufacturing by improving safety, efficiency, and productivity through automation.

We bridge the gap between engineering and execution — providing hands-on expertise that helps manufacturers transform the way materials move, systems communicate, and teams operate. From concept to commissioning, we deliver proven solutions that keep factories running smarter, safer, and more competitively.

As we continue to grow rapidly, we’re building a passionate team of problem-solvers who share our vision: to shape the next generation of manufacturing through technology and teamwork.

Why This Role Matters

As American manufacturers race to meet rising demand, automation is essential for staying competitive while reducing costs and improving safety. Intralogistics automation using AMRs, conveyors, and integrated control systems is at the heart of scalable, efficient manufacturing environments.

As an Intralogistics Engineering Specialist at MAG, you will be responsible for leading the planning, coordination, and execution of multiple automation projects and installations. This position requires a strong command of engineering principles to ensure all technical teams deliver projects accurately, efficiently, on schedule, and within budget.

Key Responsibilities

Production Monitoring & Support

  • Monitor AMR fleet performance during production to ensure continuous operation.
  • Respond quickly to system faults, alarms, and stoppages — troubleshoot and restore functionality.
  • Communicate with shift leads and engineering teams to report recurring issues or performance trends.
  • Support day-to-day launch and operational readiness activities on site.

AMR Programming, Commissioning & Configuration

  • Support the commissioning and setup of AMR systems, including initial power-up, software configuration, and network connection of new robots and stations.
  • Perform site mapping and calibration activities to define AMR navigation zones, mission start points, docking positions, and restricted areas.
  • Create and adjust missions, paths, and priorities within Fleet Management Software (FMS) or AMR Studio to align with production flow requirements.
  • Develop and validate mission routing for safe and efficient robot movement through aisles, stations, and shared spaces.
  • Integrate AMRs with external systems (e.g., PLCs, scanners, safety barriers, and conveyors) by verifying signal exchange and communication integrity.
  • Load and update maps, mission files, and station configurations during new deployments or facility layout changes.
  • Conduct full functional tests to verify navigation accuracy, obstacle avoidance, docking precision, and mission completion reliability.
  • Document all programming, mapping, and configuration activities, ensuring version control, traceability, and communication with engineering teams.
  • Collaborate with engineers during site acceptance testing (SAT) and launch support to ensure system performance meets customer expectations .

Maintenance & Troubleshooting

  • Perform basic mechanical and electrical checks on AMRs (battery swaps, wheel changes, sensor cleaning).
  • Follow established procedures for robot recovery, fault resolution, and software reloads.
  • Coordinate with vendors and internal engineers to escalate unresolved issues.
  • Ensure proper documentation of all service and repair actions.

Operational Support & Communication

  • Participate in shift hand-offs and provide clear updates on system status.
  • Assist with equipment moves, station changes, and installation activities as needed.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement efforts by identifying process or reliability enhancements.
  • Maintain a safe, organized, and professional work environment.

  • Train client personnel to assume full operational control of the system post-handover, ensuring a smooth transition and sustained performance after project completion.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical certificate or associate degree preferred.
  • Strong mechanical or electrical aptitude — comfortable working hands-on with machinery and tools.
  • Basic computer proficiency (Windows, Excel, and diagnostic software).
  • Reliable, detail-oriented, and able to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to stay calm under pressure.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and rotating shifts.

Preferred

  • Experience with industrial automation, robotics, or material-handling systems.
  • Exposure to AMR or AGV technologies
  • Familiarity with AMR fleet management tools or basic robot programming concepts.
  • Prior work in a production or maintenance support role.

Physical Demands

·      Ability to walk 10,000 steps a day.

·      Ability to work standing all day.

·      Ability to travel (approximately 30-50%) or relocate as needed.

·      Employees must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment

·       While performing the duties of this job, the employee works onsite at the facility/Plant where the employee is regularly exposed to moving vehicles. The noise in this environment is usually moderate to loud.
