AVP, Complex Claims Specialist

Summary/Objective:
The AVP, Complex Claims Specialist owns the handling and resolution of the organization’s most complex, high-exposure casualty claims across admitted and E&S portfolios. This role requires advanced technical expertise and judgment to navigate complex coverage issues, lead investigations, evaluate significant financial exposure, and develop defensible claim strategies. Operating with a high degree of independence, the AVP sets litigation and resolution strategies, directs defense counsel and experts, and leads high-stakes negotiations with claimants and attorneys. This individual serves as a key decision-maker and escalation point for complex or sensitive matters.
Essential Duties & Functions:
  • Manage a portfolio of complex, high-exposure casualty claims, including General Liability, Products, Life Sciences, Construction, and supported Excess placements
  • Analyze coverage and communicate clear, well-supported coverage positions to insureds, brokers, and other stakeholders based on policy language, facts, and allegations
  • Lead comprehensive claim investigations, engaging relevant parties (e.g., insureds, claimants, counsel, experts, and authorities) to evaluate liability, damages, and contribution potential
  • Establish, monitor, and adjust indemnity and expense reserves in alignment with claim developments and exposure
  • Develop and execute claim-specific strategies to drive timely, effective, and well-reasoned outcomes
  • Direct defense counsel and experts, including development of litigation strategy, budgets, and adherence to panel guidelines to ensure effective case management and cost control
  • Negotiate complex, high-value claims with claimants, insureds, and legal representatives to achieve optimal resolution
  • Prepare and deliver coverage position letters, including on litigated matters, with minimal to no external support
  • Serve as a subject matter expert and key resource to internal stakeholders, including presenting loss analyses and strategy in discussions with underwriting and insureds
  • Represent the company in mediations, arbitrations, depositions, trials, and other legal proceedings, as appropriate
  • Ensure accurate, timely, and compliant claim handling, including thorough documentation and adherence to internal standards and regulatory requirements
  • Identify and escalate emerging risks, coverage issues, and high-severity matters, providing recommendations and influencing outcomes

Required Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 10 - 15 + years of casualty claims experience, including claims handling in general liability, life sciences, products liability, construction liability
  • State adjuster licensing
Preferred Education and Experience:
  • CPCU, AIS and/or JD.

Work Environment:
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:
This is a full-time position. Expected days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. This position may require long hours and weekend work.
Travel:
Occasional travel may be necessary for this position – to attend mediations, trials, or large property loss exposures.
