Job Description and Responsibilities
- Backhoe operators operate heavy equipment such as backhoes, excavators, bulldozers, loaders, and graders to perform tasks like digging trenches, moving earth, loading materials, and grading surfaces for construction and maintenance projects. They conduct pre-operational checks, perform routine maintenance, and ensure equipment is clean, lubricated, and functional. Operators may also assist with traffic control, site restoration, and emergency response activities such as water main breaks or storm damage.
Skills and Qualifications
- Experience: Most positions require 2–5 years of experience operating backhoes, particularly in civil, utility, or public works projects.
- Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is typically required.
- Licenses: A valid driver’s license is often necessary, and NC II
- Technical Skills: Ability to read blueprints, maps, and specifications, perform equipment inspections, and carry out basic repairs. 1
- Safety Awareness: Knowledge of occupational health and safety regulations and the ability to work safely around other crew members and the public
