Position Overview

We are seeking a PhD-level engineer or chemist with deep knowledge of chemistry, electrochemistry, or materials science to develop comprehensive cost models for next-generation battery technologies. This high-impact role will translate complex technical processes into rigorous economic models that guide commercialization, investment, and market strategy. This full-time position is based in our Chicago office.

Key Responsibilities

Cost Modeling & Economic Analysis

  • Build LCOS and LCOE models tailored to NEF and benchmarked against other emerging chemistries.
  • Translate material, process, and manufacturing insights into accurate cost projections.
  • Perform sensitivity analyses and scenario planning to assess scaling pathways and supply chain dynamics.

Technology Assessment & Market Intelligence

  • Evaluate emerging battery technologies and assess their commercial viability, cost competitiveness, and economic implications.
  • Conduct comprehensive market research on technology trends, competitive positioning, and adoption barriers.
  • Develop technical-economic roadmaps to guide commercialization strategies.

Cross-Functional Collaboration & Project Support

  • Collaborate with R&D, supply chain, and manufacturing teams to integrate technical progress into cost models.
  • Standardize methodologies and best practices for battery technology cost analysis.
  • Support internal diligence and deployment strategy decisions with rigorous technical-economic insights.
  • Present findings and recommendations to leadership and strategic partners.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, or related field.
  • Strong foundation in electrochemistry, energy storage systems, and battery technologies.
  • Ability to understand and model complex chemical and manufacturing processes.
  • Ability to understand and model complex chemical and manufacturing processes.
  • Experience with techno-economic modeling, cost analysis and economic evaluation methods.
  • Ability to translate technical detail into clear, actionable insights.
  • Proficiency in programming and modeling tools (Python, R, MATLAB, or similar).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Background in manufacturing processes, supply chain, or scaling of advanced technologies.
  • Academic or project experience in consulting, corporate strategy, or technology assessment.
  • Published research or technical-economic studies in energy storage.
  • Experience presenting to technical and business audiences.

Key Success Metrics

  • Accuracy and impact of LCOS/LCOE and cost models.
  • Quality of strategic recommendations that inform commercialization decisions.
  • Effectiveness of collaboration across technical and business teams.
  • Contribution to competitive positioning and deployment strategies.

Pay: $110,000.00 - $120,000.00 per year
