Position Summary

The Benefits & HR Support Specialist coordinates employee benefits programs and provides HR support as needed. This role ensures accurate and timely handling of benefits enrollment, compliance with federal and California benefit regulations, and provides back-up HR support to maintain smooth operations.


Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as primary contact for employee benefits, including health, dental, vision, retirement, life insurance, and leave of absence programs.
  • Coordinate open enrollment and annual benefit renewals.
  • Process new hire enrollments, life event changes, and terminations in benefits systems.
  • Ensure compliance with benefits regulations (ACA, ERISA, COBRA, HIPAA, Cal-COBRA, CFRA, PDL).
  • Maintain accurate benefit records and assist with required filings.
  • Support HR compliance and onboarding functions during peak periods.
  • Partner with HR Director and Compliance Specialist on employee engagement initiatives and wellness programs.

Qualifications and Requirements

Education:

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in human resources, Business Administration, or related field preferred; OR equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience:

  • Previous experience in Human Resources role.
  • Nonprofit or California benefits experience highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with HRIS and benefits administration systems.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Knowledge of benefits laws and regulations (ACA, ERISA, COBRA, HIPAA, CFRA).
  • Excellent problem-solving, customer service, and communication skills.
  • Strong data management and reporting skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Collaborative team player who can step into multiple HR functions as needed.

Working Conditions

  • Remote/home office environment with reliable internet access required
  • Standard work hours with occasional flexibility for meetings across time zones
  • Regular use of computers, web-based platforms, and communication tools (e.g., Zoom, Teams, email)
  • Extended periods of screen time and keyboard use
  • Minimal exposure to environmental hazards, with primary work conducted indoors
  • Occasional virtual collaboration with internal teams and external partners

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to remain seated at a workstation for prolonged periods (up to 8 hours/day)
  • Frequent use of hands and fingers for typing, data entry, and computer navigation
  • Adequate vision to view digital screens and read electronic documents
  • Adequate hearing and speaking ability to participate in video and phone meetings
  • Ability to occasionally lift or move up to 10 pounds (e.g., office equipment or supplies)


Schedule and Travel Requirements

  • Full-time position, flexible hours
  • May require occasional evening or weekend shifts based on organizational needs
